This is the busiest region on the list this morning, with heat and severe storms active at the same time.
Extreme heat warnings are in effect for parts of Illinois and Indiana. An extreme heat warning is the step above a heat advisory and means the heat is expected to be dangerous rather than uncomfortable. Heat advisories cover additional parts of both states. Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin do not carry heat alerts this morning.
On storms, the Storm Prediction Center holds a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across the southern Great Lakes into the mid and upper Ohio Valley overnight. Columbus, Toledo, and Cincinnati in Ohio and Fort Wayne in Indiana are among its named population centers. A slight risk is the second of five steps and means scattered severe storms are expected. A marginal risk area, one step lower, surrounds it and includes Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee.
Forecasters name damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph as the hazard. The mechanism they describe is a bowing line of storms organizing across northeast Indiana into Ohio along a boundary that runs from central Wisconsin through central Indiana into eastern Kentucky. Winds at 70 mph are strong enough to snap large tree limbs, take down branches onto lines, and move unsecured patio furniture.
For Saturday itself the risk shifts south and east. Indianapolis and Cincinnati remain inside a marginal risk area for the daytime period, with the higher risk moving toward the Ohio Valley and Appalachians.
Two smaller alerts round out the morning. Michigan carries special weather statements, and a dense fog advisory covers part of Wisconsin into mid-morning. Fog of that kind is a driving hazard rather than a household one: slow down, use low beams rather than high beams, and add time rather than speed.
The practical version for households in Ohio and northeast Indiana is short. Bring in what is loose outside tonight, charge phones before bed, and expect scattered outages rather than a regional one. No large wildfires are burning in the region. The national wildfire preparedness level is 4, down one step from 5 yesterday.
No grid emergencies or water system disruptions are reported across the six states this morning. The combination worth watching today is heat demand and storm outages arriving together, which is the situation that turns a short outage into an uncomfortable one.
If you lose power and run a generator, the Consumer Product Safety Commission's guidance is to operate it outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors, and vents. Working carbon monoxide alarms belong on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, and should be tested monthly. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get outside first, then call 911. This is the guidance that matters most on exactly this kind of day, when the power goes out during heat and the generator comes out of the garage.
Public Health
Heat is the public health item across Illinois and Indiana today.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention names the people who need to take extra care on hot days: adults 65 and older, infants and young children, children with asthma, people with heart disease, pregnant women, and outdoor workers and athletes.
Its guidance is to stay in the shade as much as possible, take breaks when you can, and do outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day. Indoors, the CDC notes that fans should be used only if indoor temperatures are below 90 degrees Fahrenheit, because above that a fan moves hot air rather than cooling a person. Dialing 2-1-1 connects to information on local cooling centers. On water, the guidance is to carry a water bottle and drink and refill it through the day, and to limit drinks high in sugar and sodium along with caffeine and alcohol.
The signs of overheating the CDC lists are muscle cramping, unusually heavy sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, weakness, and nausea.
There is a specific overlap worth naming today. If storms take the power out in an area under an extreme heat warning, the households most affected are the ones the CDC lists as higher risk, and they are often the ones living alone. A phone call to a neighbor over 65 tonight is a reasonable thing to plan.

The pattern to understand is a ridge of high pressure holding over the middle of the country with weak disturbances riding over the top of it. That arrangement produces two things at once: heat underneath, and clusters of overnight storms along the northern edge.

Consecutive hot days matter more than any single one, because a house that does not cool overnight starts the next day warmer. Storm chances shift east and south into Saturday, with Indianapolis and Cincinnati remaining in a marginal risk area and the higher risk moving toward the Appalachians and the Carolinas.

The wildfire preparedness level dropping from 5 to 4 is the first meaningful national easing in a while, and it usually marks the point where the year turns from fire season toward storm and heating season. For a Great Lakes household that is the cue to think about the furnace inspection and the carbon monoxide alarm batteries before the first cold night rather than after it.
