A 5-gallon water container weighs more than 40 pounds. A preparedness plan that technically provides water but leaves you unable to move the container is badly designed. This guide sizes your water storage around what you can handle.

Why generic advice fails

The checklist says "store water."

Ready.gov and the CDC recommend at least one gallon of water per person per day, with a minimum three-day supply and a two-week supply for extended preparedness. That recommendation is correct regardless of age or ability. The problem is not how much water you need. The problem is that most preparedness guides then recommend 5-gallon or 7-gallon containers without considering whether the person can lift, carry, or pour from them.

A 5-gallon container weighs 41.7 pounds full. A 7-gallon container weighs 58.3 pounds. For many older adults and people with limited mobility, grip strength, or joint pain, these containers are not just heavy. They are unusable. Water you cannot move to where you need it, cannot pour without spilling, and cannot open with limited grip strength is not emergency water. It is weight on a shelf.

The solution is not less water. It is the same amount of water in different containers.

Choose the container that fits the person.

Can lift under 5 lbs

Individual bottles

16.9 oz or 1-liter bottles. Buy them by the case. Each bottle is a single serving you can carry in one hand. The tradeoff is storage space: a 14-day supply is 53 liters or about 4 cases.

Cost: $4 to $8 per case

Can lift 5 to 10 lbs

Gallon jugs

The best balance of weight and efficiency for most older adults. Each jug is one day's supply for one person. A 14-day supply is 14 jugs. Easy to count, easy to rotate, easy to pour with one hand. Available at any grocery store.

Cost: $1 to $1.50 per gallon

Can lift 10 to 20 lbs

2.5-gallon jugs

More efficient storage, fewer containers. Six jugs cover a 14-day supply. Some models have built-in spigots. Make sure you can grip the handle and pour with control before committing to this size.

Cost: $3 to $6 per jug

No lifting at all

Stationary containers with spigots.

If lifting any water container is difficult, the answer is not less water. It is a container that stays where it is and dispenses water through a spigot or pump at counter height. You fill it once (or have someone fill it), and then you never need to lift it again.

Countertop dispensers

A ceramic or plastic gravity dispenser that sits on a counter or table. Holds 2 to 5 gallons. Fill it from gallon jugs (you can ask someone to fill it, or fill it slowly using a pitcher). Dispense by pressing a lever or turning a spigot. No lifting to use.

Some models also filter the water, but for stored emergency water, filtration is not needed if you are storing commercially bottled water.

Floor-standing containers with pumps

A 5-gallon or larger container stored on the floor with a hand pump or battery-operated pump attached. The container never moves once filled. The pump brings water up to your cup or pitcher. Particularly useful if you have a caregiver who fills the container periodically.

Manual hand pumps cost $8 to $15. Battery-operated pumps cost $12 to $25 and dispense with a button press.

Where it goes

Water stored in the basement might as well not exist.

If you cannot get to where the water is stored, or cannot carry it from there to where you use it, the water does not help you during an outage. Store your emergency water where you can reach it with the mobility you have today.

Good placement

  • Kitchen counter or lower cabinet
  • Pantry shelf at waist height
  • Bedroom closet floor (a few gallons near where you sleep)
  • On the same floor you live on

Poor placement

  • Basement (stairs, distance, possibly no light)
  • Garage floor (requires bending, possibly steps)
  • High shelf (requires reaching overhead)
  • A different floor from where you spend your time

Pick up the heaviest water container you currently own. If you cannot comfortably lift it, pour from it, and carry it ten feet, you need a smaller container.

Buy a 3-day supply in the right container size for you. Three gallon jugs, six half-gallons, or a case of bottles. Put them where you can reach them.

Add a few more containers each week until you reach 14 gallons. Replace commercially bottled water once a year. Write the date on each container.
