Cooking from Scratch

Three meals that prove it.

The gap between knowing and doing

You can understand every idea in the first three modules and still not be able to make dinner. Technique becomes capability only when it produces a meal someone can eat. That is not a high bar, and it is not meant to be. A pan of scrambled eggs with toast and sauteed vegetables is a complete meal. So is a pot of rice with stir-fried chicken and greens. Neither requires culinary training. Both require that someone actually did it.

What "from scratch" means here

It means from ingredients, not from a kit. You started with a protein, a vegetable, and a starch, and you turned them into a meal using the methods you have been reading about: sauteing, simmering, roasting, boiling, or some combination. The recipe did not come from the side of a box. The instructions were not "remove film and microwave."

That is not a judgment on convenience food. It is a capability test. A household that can cook from scratch when it chooses to has options that a household dependent on packaged meals does not, and those options matter most when the usual supply chain is interrupted or when the budget tightens.

A household that can feed itself from ingredients has an option it cannot buy back once it is lost.

Name three, not thirty

The action step asks for three meals, not a cookbook. Three is enough to show that the skill is real and transferable across different ingredients and methods. Each one should use your knife (Module 1), your heat sources (Module 2), and a recipe or method you planned before starting (Module 3). If you can name three, you can probably name ten. If you struggle to name one, that is useful information too, and the reading below is where you start building.

The reading for this module

Read as many as you need. The first one carries the module; the second adds the safety framework that applies to every meal you cook.

Name three meals you can cook from scratch.

Name three complete meals you can prepare from raw ingredients without a kit or a box. For each one, note the main cooking method and the protein, vegetable, and starch.
