A drill is not a fast screwdriver
A hand tool works at the speed of your hand. You feel resistance, you adjust, you stop. A power tool works at the speed of a motor. It does not feel resistance the way you do, and it does not stop on its own when something goes wrong. That difference is why power tools deserve a separate module in this course, and why most emergency rooms can sort power-tool injuries by the safety step that was skipped.
This is not an argument against owning them. A drill/driver, a circular saw, a jigsaw, a sander, a reciprocating saw: each one can turn a full day of hand work into a careful hour. The question is not whether to use power tools. It is whether you use them with the same deliberate attention you would give a sharp kitchen knife, or whether you treat them like they are just faster versions of hand tools with a trigger.
The habits that matter
Power tool safety is not a long list of rules to memorize. It is a short set of habits that you run every single time, until they are automatic:
- Read the manual before first use
- Check the guard, cord, and battery
- Wear eye protection at minimum
- Secure the workpiece
- Disconnect energy before any adjustment
- Keep the work area clear and lit
None of those takes more than a few seconds. Collectively, they account for most of the difference between a clean cut and a visit to the doctor. Disconnect energy before changing blades, clearing jams, or reaching near moving parts is the single habit that prevents the largest category of serious injuries.
A power tool respects the operator who reads the manual. It has no such respect for the one who skips it.
What the inventory asks you to notice
The action step for this module is different from the hand-tool inventory you built in Module 1. Power tools need a closer look. For each one you own, you are recording not just that it exists, but whether the guard is present, whether the cord or battery is in good condition, and whether you actually have the manual. That last item matters more than it seems: manufacturer instructions are the primary source for safe operation, adjustment, and maintenance of any specific tool, and nothing in this course replaces them.
If you find a tool whose guard is missing, whose cord is damaged, or whose manual you have never read, those are worth noting. Not to throw the tool away, but because those are the gaps that matter before the next time you plug it in.
