Terminal safety
The one thing about 9V batteries most people do not know.
A 9V battery has both terminals on the same end, close together. If a metal object bridges them, the resulting short circuit generates enough heat to start a fire. This has caused documented house fires in junk drawers, battery recycling bags, and kitchen cabinets.
Tape before storing
Cover both terminals with a piece of electrical tape before putting a 9V battery in a drawer, bag, or storage container. This takes five seconds and eliminates the short-circuit risk entirely. Masking tape or duct tape works too.
Tape before disposing
Even a weak battery retains enough charge to short-circuit. Tape the terminals before placing a spent 9V in any collection container. Fire departments across the country list terminal taping as their primary 9V battery safety recommendation.
Never store loose

Lithium 9V batteries maintain their voltage and then drop sharply when spent. The detector may go from normal operation to dead with a much shorter warning period.
Both chemistries can leak if left far past their useful life, but this is rare with modern Energizer cells. The greater risk with 9V batteries is the terminal short-circuit fire hazard described above, which is a storage and disposal concern rather than a failure mode.

USB-C rechargeable 9V batteries are increasingly popular for guitar pedals and multimeters.
