Maintenance
Backflush vs shake. This is the real difference.
Sawyer Squeeze: backflush with the syringe
Fill the included syringe with clean water, attach to the outlet end, and push water backwards through the filter. Sediment trapped in the hollow fibers flushes out, restoring flow rate to near-new levels. This can be repeated thousands of times. In turbid water, backflush after every liter or two. In clean water, once per trip is sufficient.
The backflush syringe is critical. Keep it with the filter. Losing it in the field means you cannot maintain the filter effectively. Some users carry a second syringe as backup.
Katadyn BeFree: shake or swish to clean
Fill the flask with clean water, screw on the filter cap, and shake vigorously. Or swish the filter element in clean water. This dislodges surface sediment but cannot clear material trapped deeper in the membrane fibers. Over time, flow rate degrades permanently, especially if used frequently in silty or turbid water.
The 1,000-liter rating is generous for clean mountain streams. In turbid or silty water, real-world filter life may be closer to 300 to 500 liters before flow rate becomes impractical. Replacement filters are available but add ongoing cost.
