Installation

Four things that determine whether your tank lasts 20 years.

Level foundation

A large poly tank on uneven ground will develop stress fractures over time as one side bears more weight. A compacted gravel bed (4 inches deep, tamped level) or a poured concrete pad is standard. The pad should extend at least 6 inches beyond the tank footprint on all sides.

UV protection

UV light degrades polyethylene over years of outdoor exposure. Dark-colored tanks (black, dark green, dark blue) resist UV better than translucent or light-colored tanks. If using a light-colored tank outdoors, position it in shade or build a simple shade structure. Algae also grows faster in translucent tanks exposed to sunlight.

Overflow management

Every large tank needs an overflow fitting positioned near the top. When filling from a garden hose, it is easy to walk away and forget. Overflow water should drain to a safe location, not against the house foundation. A simple overflow elbow with a short hose directed to a garden bed is sufficient.

Freeze protection

Water expands when it freezes. A full tank in a hard freeze can crack. In freeze-prone climates, insulate the tank or position it in a heated garage or utility building. For outdoor tanks, keep a small pump or circulation system running during hard freezes, or leave the tank 10% empty to accommodate expansion.

What to buy

The specs that matter at this scale.

Potable water rated

Not all poly tanks are rated for drinking water. Look for NSF 61 certification or explicit food-grade/potable-water rating. Tanks rated for agricultural or rainwater collection only may use resins not approved for drinking water contact.

Dark color, opaque

Black or dark green tanks block the light that promotes algae growth and UV degradation. Dark tanks also retain heat better in winter, which helps with freeze resistance. This is the single most important spec decision after potable-water rating.

Bottom drain fitting

A threaded fitting at the bottom of the tank allows gravity drainage without a pump. This matters during power outages. Look for a tank with at least one 2-inch NPT fitting near the base. Add a ball valve for controlled flow.
