Tires and Wheels

Four patches of rubber, each about the size of a hand. They are the only part of the vehicle that touches the road.

Pressure, tread, sizing, age, rotation, wear patterns, and knowing when to replace. The one maintenance item that affects braking, handling, fuel economy, and safety more than anything else you can check.

Why tires matter this much

Everything the vehicle does goes through four small patches.

Accelerating, braking, steering, cornering, and maintaining stability in rain, snow, and emergencies all happen at the tire contact patch. Each patch is roughly the size of a human hand. When those patches lose grip because the tires are underinflated, worn, old, or mismatched, the vehicle's ability to stop, turn, and stay on the road degrades in ways the driver may not notice until the moment it matters most.

A tire that is 10 PSI below the recommended pressure runs 25 percent hotter than a properly inflated one. Heat accelerates wear, weakens the sidewall, and increases the risk of a blowout. The dashboard tire-pressure monitoring system does not alert the driver until pressure is roughly 25 percent below the recommended level, by which time the tire has been operating in the danger zone for weeks or months.

Tread depth determines how well the tire channels water away from the contact patch. At 4/32 of an inch, wet braking distance begins to increase noticeably. At 2/32 (the legal minimum in most states), the tire is effectively a slick in standing water. Hydroplaning becomes likely at speeds that would be safe on new tires.

The five tire checks

These five checks take less than 10 minutes and cover everything that determines whether a tire is safe to drive on.

1 Pressure checked cold, with a gauge, against the door-placard specification
2 Tread depth measured with a gauge or coin test at multiple points
3 Sidewall condition inspected for bulges, cracks, cuts, and embedded objects
4 Wear pattern checked for even vs. uneven wear across the tread face
5 Tire age read from the DOT date code on the sidewall

Do not forget the spare.

The spare sits in the trunk or under the vehicle losing pressure for months or years. Check it every time you check the other four. A flat spare during a flat tire is two problems instead of one. Compact spares typically need 60 PSI, which is higher than regular tires.

Check 1

Tire pressure.

The single highest-return monthly maintenance habit. A five-minute check that prevents the most common tire failure mode and extends tire life by thousands of miles.

The correct pressure

The recommended tire pressure for your vehicle is printed on the information label on the driver's door frame (the door-jamb sticker). It is listed in PSI, separately for front and rear tires. Some vehicles also list a different pressure for full-load conditions.

This is the number to use. The number molded into the tire sidewall (often 44 or 51 PSI) is the maximum pressure the tire can safely hold. It is not the recommended operating pressure for your vehicle. Inflating to the sidewall maximum results in a harsh ride, reduced traction, and accelerated center-strip tread wear.

When to check

Check when tires are cold: before driving more than one mile, or after the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours. Driving heats the tires and increases the pressure reading by 3 to 5 PSI, which masks an underinflation problem.

Check at least once a month and before any long trip. Also check after any significant temperature change. Every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in outside temperature causes roughly 1 PSI loss. A tire inflated correctly in September may be 5 to 8 PSI low by December without losing any air through the tire itself.

How to add air

Most gas stations have air compressors, some free and some coin-operated. Remove the valve cap from the tire. Press the compressor nozzle firmly onto the valve stem until you hear air flowing, not hissing around the edges. Add air in short bursts, checking with your gauge after each burst. Overshoot by 1 to 2 PSI and let air out to the exact number, since letting air out is more precise than adding it. Replace the valve cap, which keeps dirt and moisture out of the valve core.

Choosing a tire gauge

A digital tire gauge ($8 to $15) or a dial gauge ($10 to $20) gives a reliable, repeatable reading. Pen-style gauges (the metal stick that slides out) are less accurate and harder to read.

Keep one gauge per vehicle, stored in the glove box or center console. Using the same gauge every time removes the variable of gauge-to-gauge differences. The air machines at gas stations have built-in gauges, but they are often inaccurate from heavy use and rough handling.

The TPMS light

The tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light on the dashboard illuminates when at least one tire is approximately 25 percent below the recommended pressure. If the recommended pressure is 35 PSI, the light comes on around 26 PSI. That is already dangerously low.

The TPMS is a warning of last resort, not a monitoring tool. By the time the light appears, the tire has been running underinflated long enough to accumulate heat damage and uneven wear. A monthly gauge check catches underinflation long before the TPMS does.

If the TPMS light comes on while driving, reduce speed and check all four tires with a gauge as soon as it is safe to stop. A sudden pressure drop (10+ PSI in a short time) may indicate a puncture. A gradual drop over weeks is normal seasonal loss.

What underinflation does

Increases rolling resistance, reducing fuel economy by 1 to 3 percent per 5 PSI low

Causes the outer edges of the tread to bear more load, accelerating edge wear

Heats the sidewall, weakening it over time and increasing blowout risk

Lengthens braking distances, especially in wet conditions

Makes the vehicle feel sluggish in turns and lane changes

Tire literacy

Reading the sidewall.

Every tire has its specifications printed on the sidewall. Knowing how to read them means you can buy the right replacement, verify that a shop mounted the correct size, and check how old the tire actually is.

The tire size code

A code like P215/65R16 98H appears on every passenger tire. Each part tells you something specific.

P Passenger vehicle tire. LT means light truck.
215 Tread width in millimeters. The width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall when mounted.
65 Aspect ratio. The sidewall height is 65 percent of the tread width. Lower numbers mean a shorter, stiffer sidewall.
R Radial construction. Nearly all modern tires are radial.
16 Wheel diameter in inches. The tire must match the wheel size.
98 Load index. The maximum weight the tire can support at its maximum pressure. Higher numbers mean higher capacity.
H Speed rating. The maximum sustained speed the tire is designed for. H = 130 mph. T = 118 mph. V = 149 mph. Replacement tires should match or exceed the original speed rating.

When replacing tires

Match the size on the door-jamb label or the size currently on the vehicle if it has already been changed from the original. Mixing different sizes on the same axle is unsafe. If the vehicle has different front and rear sizes (staggered fitment, common on some sport and luxury vehicles), the tires are not interchangeable between axles and cannot be rotated front to back.

The DOT date code

The last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall tell you when the tire was manufactured. This is the tire's age, which matters independently of tread depth because rubber compounds degrade over time even when the tire looks fine.

How to read it

Look for a string of characters starting with "DOT" followed by a series of letters and numbers. The last four digits are the date code. For example:

DOT XXXX XXXX 2219

22 = manufactured in the 22nd week. 19 = manufactured in 2019. This tire was made in late May or early June of 2019.

Why age matters

Rubber compounds oxidize and lose flexibility over time, even on tires that are driven regularly or stored properly. A tire that is six years old may look fine on the surface but have internal degradation that increases the risk of a sudden failure, particularly at highway speeds or in hot weather.

Most tire manufacturers and safety organizations recommend having tires inspected annually after six years of age and replacing them at ten years regardless of remaining tread depth. This applies to the spare tire as well, which is often the oldest tire on the vehicle.

Date code location note

The DOT code may be on only one side of the tire. If you do not see the full code with the last four digits on the outward-facing sidewall, check the inward-facing side (between the tire and the vehicle). Some tires require you to look at the tire from inside the wheel well or have the tire removed to see the full code.

Check 2 and Check 4

Tread depth and wear patterns.

Tread depth tells you how much tire life remains and how well it performs in rain. Wear patterns tell you whether something else on the vehicle is damaging your tires.

Measuring tread depth

The penny test (2/32 minimum)

Insert a U.S. penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down into the groove. If the top of Lincoln's head is visible above the tread, the depth is at or below 2/32 of an inch. This is the legal minimum in most states. The tire must be replaced.

The quarter test (4/32 safety threshold)

Insert a U.S. quarter with Washington's head down. If the tread touches the top of Washington's head, you have at least 4/32 of an inch. Below 4/32, wet braking distances increase significantly and hydroplaning risk rises. Consider this the practical replacement threshold, especially if you drive in rain or snow.

Tread depth gauge ($3 to $8)

A small handheld tool that gives an exact reading in 32nds of an inch. More precise than the coin test. New tires typically start at 10/32 to 11/32. Measure at multiple points across the tread face: inner edge, center, and outer edge. If the readings differ significantly, the tire has an uneven wear pattern (see below).

Wear indicator bars

Every tire has small raised bars molded into the tread grooves at the 2/32 level. When the tread surface wears down flush with these bars, the tire is at the legal minimum. They are visible as narrow bridges between the tread blocks when the tire is approaching end of life.

Reading wear patterns

Uneven wear means something is wrong. The pattern tells you what. Fix the cause before mounting new tires, or the new tires will develop the same pattern.

Center-strip wear

Center of the tread worn more than the edges

Cause: chronic overinflation. The tire's center bulges outward and carries more load. Fix: inflate to the door-placard specification, not the sidewall maximum.

Both-edge wear

Both outer edges worn more than the center

Cause: chronic underinflation. The tire collapses slightly, putting more load on the edges. Fix: maintain correct pressure with monthly checks.

One-edge wear

One side of the tread worn significantly more than the other

Cause: wheel alignment problem (camber). The wheel tilts, loading one edge. Fix: professional wheel alignment before mounting new tires.

Cupping or scalloping

Random smooth dips in the tread surface

Cause: worn shock absorbers, struts, or other suspension components. The tire bounces rather than rolling smoothly. Fix: suspension inspection and repair. This is professional territory.

Feathering

Tread blocks feel smooth in one direction and sharp in the other when you run your hand across the tread

Cause: toe alignment problem. The wheels point slightly inward or outward instead of straight ahead. Fix: professional wheel alignment.

Making tires last

Rotation, matching, and seasonal tires.

Tire rotation

Front tires wear faster than rear tires because they handle steering and carry a larger share of braking load. Without rotation, front tires may need replacement at 30,000 miles while the rears still have 60 percent of their tread life remaining.

Rotation moves tires between positions to equalize wear, extending the life of the full set. Most manufacturers recommend rotation every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. A convenient schedule is to rotate at every oil change.

The rotation pattern depends on the drivetrain (front-wheel, rear-wheel, all-wheel) and whether the tires are directional (designed to roll in only one direction). The owner's manual specifies the correct pattern. If you have your tires rotated at a shop, confirm they followed the correct pattern rather than assuming.

Staggered fitment

Some vehicles have different tire sizes on the front and rear axles. These tires cannot be rotated front to back. They can only be swapped left to right on the same axle, if they are not directional. This means the fronts will always wear faster and may need replacement sooner than the rears.

Why four matching tires matter

A vehicle's braking, traction control, stability control, and all-wheel-drive systems are designed around four tires with the same size, tread pattern, and similar tread depth. Mismatched tires cause these systems to behave unpredictably.

On all-wheel-drive vehicles, mismatched tire circumferences (from different tread depths or different brands) can damage the transfer case or center differential. Many AWD manufacturers specify that all four tires must be replaced together or that any replacement tire must be within a specific tread-depth tolerance of the others.

At minimum, tires on the same axle must always match in size, brand, and tread pattern. Ideally, all four tires match. When replacing only two tires, mount the new pair on the rear axle regardless of drivetrain. Newer tires on the rear reduces the risk of oversteer in wet conditions.

Seasonal tires

All-season tires are a compromise. They perform adequately in a range of conditions but do not excel in any extreme. In regions with regular snow and ice, a dedicated set of winter tires on a second set of wheels provides substantially better traction, shorter stopping distances, and safer handling.

Winter tires use a softer rubber compound that remains flexible below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, where all-season compounds begin to harden and lose grip. They also have a tread pattern designed to channel snow and slush. The three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol on the sidewall means the tire meets the industry standard for severe snow performance.

Summer or performance tires provide the best dry and wet grip in warm conditions but are dangerous on snow and ice. If your vehicle has summer tires, they must be replaced with all-season or winter tires before the first freeze.

Store the off-season set properly.

Stack tires flat (not standing upright) in a cool, dry, dark location. Keep them away from electric motors, which produce ozone that accelerates rubber degradation. If the tires are mounted on wheels, reduce the pressure to about 15 PSI for storage to reduce stress on the sidewall. Reinflate to the correct pressure before mounting.

Check 3

Sidewall inspection and when to replace.

The sidewall is the most vulnerable part of the tire. Unlike the tread, which is thick and reinforced, the sidewall is relatively thin and relies on its flexibility and structure to absorb impacts. Damage to the sidewall cannot be repaired. A tire with sidewall damage must be replaced.

Bulges

A visible bulge or bubble on the sidewall means the internal structure has been damaged, usually from hitting a pothole, curb, or road debris at speed. The sidewall has lost its structural integrity at that point. Do not drive on a tire with a sidewall bulge. It can blow out without warning.

Cracks or dry rot

Fine cracks in the sidewall rubber, sometimes called dry rot or weather checking, indicate aging and UV degradation. Surface cracking is common on older tires (6+ years). Deep cracking that exposes the cord fabric beneath is a replacement condition.

Cuts or gouges

A cut that exposes the tire's internal cord fabric is a replacement condition. A shallow scuff that only marks the surface rubber is cosmetic and does not affect safety, but should be monitored during future inspections.

Embedded objects

A nail, screw, or other object embedded in the tread may be repairable if it has not reached the sidewall area. Do not remove it yourself if the tire is still holding air. Drive carefully to a tire shop and let them assess whether a plug-patch repair is possible. An object in the sidewall itself means replacement.

Replace when any of these are true

Tread depth is at or below 2/32 of an inch (penny test fails) at any point on the tire

Tread depth is below 4/32 and you drive regularly in rain or snow (quarter test fails)

Any sidewall bulge, deep crack, cord exposure, or cut reaching the internal structure

The tire is 10 or more years old regardless of tread depth or appearance

Vibration, pulling, or noise that a tire shop attributes to internal tire damage

The tire has been driven flat and shows internal heat damage or sidewall deformation

Buying replacement tires

Match the tire size on the door-jamb label. Match or exceed the original speed rating and load index. Buy the same brand and model for all four if possible, or at minimum for both tires on the same axle.

Price is not the primary consideration. A mid-range tire from a reputable manufacturer (Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Yokohama, Cooper, General, Firestone, Hankook, Toyo) with strong wet-braking test results will serve most households better than either the cheapest option or the most expensive performance tire.

Read independent test reviews from Tire Rack, Consumer Reports, or similar organizations. Wet braking distance, tread life warranty, and noise are the three factors that affect daily driving most.

Do this today

The 10-minute tire check.

1.
Get a tire gauge. Check all four tires cold. Compare to the door-placard pressure. Add air to any tire more than 2 PSI below spec.
2.
Run the penny test on each tire at the inner edge, center, and outer edge of the tread. Note any tire near or below 2/32.
3.
Walk around and visually inspect each sidewall for bulges, cracks, cuts, or embedded nails and screws.
4.
Compare wear across the tread face. Is it even, or is one edge or the center wearing faster?
5.
Find the DOT date code on each tire and record the age. Note any tires over six years old.
6.
Check the spare tire's pressure. If it is low, inflate it to the specification on the spare's sidewall.

When to call a professional

Tire work that belongs at a shop.

Mounting and dismounting tires from wheels requires a tire machine. This is not a DIY task.
Wheel balancing ensures even weight distribution. Unbalanced wheels cause vibration at highway speeds.
Wheel alignment adjusts the angle of the wheels relative to the vehicle's frame. Required when wear patterns indicate an alignment problem, or after hitting a significant pothole or curb.
Puncture repair in the tread area is a shop task. A plug-patch combination costs $15 to $30 and is the only reliable repair method. Plug-only kits from auto parts stores are a temporary measure at best.
TPMS sensor replacement when the TPMS light stays on after all tires are correctly inflated. A failed sensor needs professional diagnosis and replacement.
