Ladders: the tool most likely to hurt you

No blade, no motor, no current, and still the tool that sends more household users to the doctor than any other. The rules that prevent the fall are short, specific, and fully knowable in twenty minutes.

Why this matters

Half a million a year

The gutter is clogged, the rain is coming, and the extension ladder has lived behind the shed since the house was bought. It goes up against the eave at whatever angle it lands, the feet on damp grass, and the last thing the person on it remembers is reaching sideways for a handful of leaves. That is the whole story of most ladder injuries. No exotic failure, no defective product. A tool that was fine, set up wrong, used past its rules.

The numbers are not small. In a single recent year, roughly 511,000 people in the United States were treated for ladder injuries in emergency rooms, clinics, and doctors' offices, at a cost NIOSH puts near $24 billion.[1] Among construction workers treated in emergency rooms for a fall, about four in five fell from a ladder.[2] And the leading single cause, in roughly 40 percent of cases, is an extension ladder set at too shallow an angle and sliding out at the base.[3] That one is a geometry problem, and geometry is teachable.

What to own

Two ladders cover most houses

Ladders are not on the ten-tool starter list because the right ladder depends on where you live more than any other tool. A renter on the third floor needs one thing; a homeowner with a two-story eave needs another. Start with the tier that matches your housing and add nothing until a real job demands it.

Starter tier

Step stool or 4-foot stepladder

Every household, every housing type. Changing a bulb, reaching a top shelf, replacing a smoke alarm battery. A two- or three-step stool with a top handrail is safer than a kitchen chair by a wide margin and is the ladder used most often. Apartment dwellers can stop here. $30 to $70.

6-foot stepladder, fiberglass, Type I

The house ladder. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, painting walls, hanging curtains, cleaning first-floor gutters from the ground side. Six feet puts standing height around 4 feet, which reaches a 10-foot ceiling. An 8-foot version is worth it for cathedral ceilings. $100 to $180.

Complete tier

Extension ladder sized to your eave, fiberglass, Type I or IA

Gutters, roof access, second-story windows, the antenna after the storm. Sizing is covered below; most one-story houses want 20 to 24 feet and most two-story houses want 28 feet. Heavy, awkward to carry alone, and the ladder involved in most serious falls. Buy it when a job needs it, learn the setup rules first. $200 to $400.

Multi-position ladder

Folds into a stepladder, a straight ladder, a stairway ladder, or a low scaffold. Useful on stairs and for a household with no room to store two ladders. Heavier than a stepladder of the same reach, and the hinges are the inspection point. Not a substitute for a full-height extension ladder at a two-story eave. $150 to $300.

Ladder stabilizer or standoff

A wide bracket that clamps to the top of an extension ladder and rests against the roof or wall on either side of the gutter. Keeps the ladder off the gutter, widens the footprint, and makes a top-out feel like a doorway instead of a tightrope. The single best accessory a homeowner can add. $40 to $80.

Acreage adds an orchard ladder (tripod, one leg into soft ground) for fruit trees, and nothing else that a house does not already need.

Choosing

Rating, material, and length

Duty rating

Every ladder carries a label with a duty rating, the maximum total load it is built to carry: you, your clothes and boots, and everything in your hands or on your belt.[4]

Do the arithmetic honestly. A 200-pound person in boots with a 30-pound bucket of tools is past a Type II before the first rung. Buy one rating above what you think you need; the price difference is small and the ladder will outlive the reason you bought it.

Fiberglass or aluminum

Aluminum is light and cheap and conducts electricity. Fiberglass is heavier, costs more, and does not. OSHA's ladder standard requires nonconductive side rails wherever a ladder or the person on it could contact energized electrical equipment.[5] At a house, that describes the extension ladder, which goes up near the service drop and the meter, and the stepladder used around light fixtures and ceiling fans. Buy both in fiberglass. Aluminum is fine for a step stool that never leaves the kitchen. Wood is heavy, rots, and is hard to inspect; leave it at the estate sale.

Sizing an extension ladder

The number on the box is the fully extended length, and you never get to use all of it. The sections overlap, the base sits out from the wall at the 4-to-1 angle, and the top has to reach 3 feet past a roof edge you are stepping onto.[5][4] As a working rule, a ladder reaches a support point roughly 3 to 4 feet lower than its labeled length once it is set at the correct angle, and a roof edge needs 3 feet on top of that. A one-story eave at 10 to 12 feet wants a 20- to 24-foot ladder. A two-story eave at 18 to 20 feet wants a 28-foot ladder. If you are between sizes, go longer.

Setup

Where the fall is decided

Nearly every ladder injury is settled before anyone climbs. The base, the angle, the top, and the ground are the four things to get right, and none of them takes more than a minute.

Firm, level ground

Not soft soil, not gravel, not ice, not a slope. Not a tarp or a sheet of plywood over mud. If the ground is uneven, use a leg leveler made for the ladder, not a brick under one foot. Both feet flat, both rubber pads clean.

The 4-to-1 angle

For an extension or straight ladder, set the base one foot out from the wall for every four feet of height to the point where the ladder rests. Sixteen feet up means four feet out. That gives roughly 75 degrees.[4] Too shallow and the base slides out; too steep and the ladder tips back. Both are the fall NIOSH built its free Ladder Safety app to prevent, with an angle indicator that reads the setup for you.[6] A quick check without a phone: stand at the base with toes against the feet and arms straight out; your palms should land on a rung.

Three feet above the landing

If the ladder is your way onto a roof or any upper surface, its side rails must extend at least 3 feet above that landing so there is something to hold while you step off and, more important, while you step back on.[5] A ladder that stops at the gutter forces a blind step down onto the top rung with nothing in hand. Tie the top off or use a stabilizer.

Locks, rope, and the top rest

Extend the ladder from the ground, not from a rung. Watch both rung locks click over a rung and the rope run clean through the pulley before you raise it. Rest the top on a solid surface, never on a gutter, a window, or a loose board. A stabilizer bracket spreads the load to the wall or roof on both sides.

Stepladders open all the way

Legs fully spread, both spreader braces locked straight. A stepladder is never leaned closed against a wall and used as a straight ladder; it has no feet for that and will walk out from under you.[7]

Doors and wires

Never in front of a door that can open toward you unless it is locked or someone is holding it.[5] Look up before you raise anything. The service drop, the line to the garage, the neighbor's line at the property edge. Keep every ladder, fiberglass included, well clear of overhead lines; nonconductive rails protect against incidental contact with wiring, not against leaning a wet ladder into a power line.

Climbing

On the ladder

Three points of contact

Two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand, at every moment. That rules out climbing with a tool in one hand and a bucket in the other. Use a tool belt, a bucket hook, or a rope to haul things up after you are in position.[7]

Face the ladder, both directions

Up and down. Turning around on a ladder to come down forward is how people miss a rung. Step down the way you stepped up.[7]

Never the top cap, never the top three rungs

On a stepladder, not the top cap and not the top step. On a straight or extension ladder, not the top three rungs.[7] The label on the rail marks the highest standing level. If the work is out of reach from there, the answer is a taller ladder, not a higher step. The pail shelf on a stepladder holds paint, not people.

Belt buckle between the rails

The single rule that prevents the sideways fall. When your hips move outside the side rails, the ladder's center of gravity moves with them. Climb down and move the ladder. It takes ninety seconds. The alternative can take a season to recover from.

One person, and the ladder stays put

One person on the ladder at a time. Never shift, walk, or extend a ladder while someone is on it.[5] Do not let a helper stand on the bottom rung to weigh it down; tie it off instead, and let the helper hold the rails from the side.

Who should not be on the extension ladder. Anyone dizzy, on a medication that affects balance, working alone with no one aware they are up, or working in wind, rain, or after dark. Hire the gutter cleaning that year. This is not a judgment about capability. It is the same calculation a roofer makes before every climb.

Maintain

Inspect before every use

OSHA requires ladders to be inspected periodically and after anything that could have damaged them, and a ladder with a structural defect is tagged and taken out of service until it is repaired to its original strength.[5] At home that means a thirty-second walk-around every time the ladder comes out, and a rule that a cracked ladder is a discarded ladder. There is no home repair for a fiberglass rail.

The walk-around

  • Rails: cracks, splits, dents, or bends. On fiberglass, look for fibers standing proud of the surface where the resin has broken down.
  • Rungs and steps: tight, straight, not worn smooth, no missing rivets.
  • Feet: rubber pads present, pliable, not packed with mud.
  • Extension ladders: rung locks snap and hold, rope not frayed, pulley turns.
  • Stepladders: spreader braces lock straight, hinges tight, no wobble when opened on a flat floor.
  • Anything greasy, muddy, or painted over. Grease on a rung is a fall; paint on a wooden ladder hides cracks.

Storage

Store ladders horizontally on hooks or a rack, supported at both ends and the middle, out of the sun and off the ground. Fiberglass chalks and weakens in years of direct sun; aluminum corrodes lying in wet grass; rope rots. A ladder that lives behind the shed for a decade is a ladder to inspect with real suspicion. Keep it locked or indoors if there are children who climb; a stored ladder is an invitation.

Buying

What to look for at the store

A ladder is a buy-once tool if it is bought right. Read the label first: duty rating, material, and the ANSI A14 standard mark that says an independent body tested it. Then put your hands on it. Open a stepladder on the store floor and push on it; a good one does not rack or twist. Extend an extension ladder a few rungs and work the locks; they should snap with authority.

Werner, Louisville, and Little Giant have made ladders for decades and are the names most tradespeople own. A fiberglass Type I 6-footer from any of them runs $100 to $180 and will still be in service when the house is sold. Skip the aluminum Type II on sale beside it; the $40 saved is the difference between a ladder rated for you with a drill in hand and one that is not. Skip any ladder without a legible label. Skip anything at a yard sale unless you can inspect every rail and rung in daylight and the label is intact.

Spend the accessory money on a stabilizer for the extension ladder before anything else. A leg leveler is the second purchase if your ground is uneven. Ladder hooks for the garage wall cost $10 and are what turn a ladder on the ground into a ladder that lasts.

Common mistakes

Where the fall comes from

Too shallow an angle

The leading cause. Feels more stable at the bottom, until the base slides. Four to one, every time, and check it standing at the feet with arms out.

Reaching instead of moving

Gutters are long and ladders are narrow, so every gutter job tempts the sideways reach. Set a rule before you climb: three feet of gutter, then down and move.

Standing on the top of a stepladder

The top cap is a tool tray, and the step below it is out of bounds on most ladders. If you are up there, the ladder is too short for the job.

Resting the ladder on the gutter

Aluminum gutters crush and fold. When they do, the ladder drops and slides sideways. A stabilizer bracket or a top-out 3 feet past the roof edge solves it.

The service drop comes to the house at eave height, right where the ladder goes. Fiberglass for anything that goes up outdoors.

Climbing with your hands full

The pressure washer wand, the bucket, the box of shingles. Haul it up on a rope after you are set, or wear it on a belt. Both hands free until you are standing where you will work.

Working alone with no one aware

A fall from a ladder onto a driveway with nobody home is a different injury from the same fall with someone inside. Tell someone. Keep the phone on you, not in the truck.
