Sharing the road.

Roads carry everything from 80,000-pound semi-trucks to ten-year-olds on bicycles. Knowing how to drive safely around each type of road user prevents the collisions that ruin lives, and most of these collisions are entirely preventable.

The principle

Every road user is someone's family.

Most multi-vehicle collisions involve a failure of one driver to account for another road user's size, speed, visibility, or legal right-of-way. The truck driver who cannot see you because you are sitting in a blind spot. The cyclist who has nowhere to go because you passed with 18 inches of clearance. The pedestrian who assumed you would stop at the crosswalk. The emergency vehicle you did not hear because the windows were up and the music was loud.

The core skill is adjusting your driving to the road users around you. A highway shared with semi-trucks requires different following distances, different passing strategies, and different lane-change awareness than a residential street shared with children on bikes. Neither situation is difficult. Both require that the driver knows the specific adjustments and applies them consistently.

Nearly every collision pattern in this page follows the same structure: a driver did not know the rule, did not see the other road user, or knew the rule but did not follow it because it took a few extra seconds. The adjustments are small. The consequences of skipping them are not.

This page covers each road user type in detail: the specific distances, the blind spots, the collision patterns, and the behaviors that prevent them. Much of this was covered in driver's education. Most of us could use the refresher, because the habits that erode over years of routine driving are the same habits that prevent fatalities.

Large vehicles

Trucks, buses, and the no-zones.

A fully loaded semi-truck weighs up to 80,000 pounds, roughly 20 times the weight of a typical passenger car. That weight difference determines everything: stopping distance, acceleration, maneuverability, and the outcome of a collision. In a crash between a passenger car and a semi, the car's occupants suffer fatal injuries in roughly 97% of the fatalities. The physics are not negotiable, and they are entirely one-sided.

Commercial trucks also have four large blind spots that truck drivers call "no-zones." These are areas around the truck where a passenger vehicle can be completely invisible to the truck driver despite being only a few feet away. FMCSA estimates that roughly one-third of crashes between large trucks and passenger vehicles involve a car in the truck's blind spot. Every one of those crashes was preventable by the car driver.

The four no-zones

Front no-zone: 20 feet

The area directly in front of the truck's cab extends roughly 20 feet. The truck driver sits high in the cab and cannot see the road surface immediately ahead. A passenger car that cuts in front of a truck and brakes removes the truck's ability to stop in time. At highway speed, the truck needs over 500 feet to stop. The car that just merged in is 20 feet ahead.

After passing a truck, do not merge back into the truck's lane until you can see both of the truck's headlights in your rearview mirror. This ensures enough stopping distance between you and the truck. Use your turn signal and merge gradually. Never cut in and brake.

Rear no-zone: 30+ feet

The area directly behind the trailer extends 30 feet or more. Semi-trucks have no rearview mirror because the trailer blocks the view completely. The truck driver relies entirely on side mirrors for rearward visibility, and neither side mirror covers the area directly behind the trailer.

Tailgating a truck is dangerous for three reasons: the driver cannot see you, you cannot see traffic or hazards ahead of the truck, and a sudden stop puts your vehicle at risk of underriding the trailer, where the car slides underneath the higher trailer floor. Underride crashes are among the most lethal collision types on the road.

Left-side no-zone: 1 lane

The blind spot along the truck's left side extends from the cab back about one full lane width and runs along the length of the trailer. This is the smaller of the two side blind spots because the driver's seat is on the left side and the left mirror is closer. You are visible to the driver in this zone for only a brief window as you pass.

Pass on the left and do it decisively. Accelerate to a speed that moves you through the blind spot zone within a few seconds. Do not linger alongside. If you cannot complete the pass, drop back rather than staying in the blind spot.

Right-side no-zone: 2+ lanes

The largest and most dangerous blind spot extends from the cab diagonally backward across two or more lanes along the entire length of the trailer. Many passenger vehicles can fit entirely within this zone and be completely invisible to the truck driver. The right-side mirror is farther from the driver's seat and provides a narrower view.

Never pass a truck on the right. If a truck is turning right, do not try to squeeze between the truck and the curb. Trucks swing wide during right turns because the rear axle tracks a tighter path than the front axle, a phenomenon called off-tracking. The gap between the truck and the curb that looks passable will close as the trailer cuts inward.

The mirror rule

If you cannot see the truck driver's face in either of the truck's side mirrors, the driver cannot see you. This is the simplest and most reliable test. It applies in all four no-zones. If you look at the truck's mirror and do not see the driver's face, you are invisible to them. Adjust your position until you can see the driver, or move well away from the truck.

Stopping distance and following distance

A loaded semi-truck traveling at 65 mph on dry pavement needs approximately 525 feet to come to a complete stop, roughly the length of two football fields. A passenger car at the same speed stops in approximately 316 feet. That 200-foot difference means that if you and a truck are both following the same vehicle and it stops suddenly, you will stop in time and the truck will not.

Maintain at least four seconds of following distance behind a truck at highway speeds. In rain, extend to six or more seconds. At night, extend further because the truck blocks your headlight illumination and you cannot see road hazards beyond the truck until you are very close.

Following a truck also means you cannot see traffic signals, road signs, construction warnings, or stopped traffic ahead until the truck reveals them. The extra distance gives you reaction time for hazards the truck is hiding from your view.

Passing trucks safely

  • Always pass on the left. The left blind spot is smaller and the truck driver has better visibility on that side.
  • Pass decisively. Accelerate to a speed that clears the truck efficiently. Lingering alongside a truck means lingering in its blind spot.
  • Signal before moving into the passing lane. Give the truck driver notice of your intention so they can adjust if needed.
  • Do not merge back until you can see both headlights. Check your rearview mirror. When both headlights are visible, there is enough space for the truck to stop behind you if needed.
  • Account for wind. Large trucks create significant air turbulence. When you pass a truck or a truck passes you, expect a push or pull effect on your vehicle, especially on gusty days, on bridges, and when traveling through highway gaps in hills or buildings.

Truck turns and intersections

Trucks make wide right turns. The cab swings to the left before turning right, and the trailer tracks inward as it follows the cab around the corner. This creates a squeeze zone between the trailer and the curb that closes rapidly. Cyclists and passenger vehicles caught in this zone have been crushed. If you see a truck with its right turn signal on, do not attempt to pass on the right. Do not pull up alongside the truck at a red light if it might turn right. Wait behind the truck and let it complete the turn.

At intersections, give trucks extra room. They may straddle two lanes to make a turn. They may need to enter the intersection before the turn can begin. They may not be able to see traffic signals mounted low or to the side. Be patient and give them the space the physics require.

Two-wheeled vehicles

Motorcycles and scooters.

Motorcyclists are roughly 29 times more likely to die in a crash than passenger car occupants per vehicle mile traveled, according to NHTSA. Per vehicle mile, they are also four times more likely to be injured. In 2022, 6,218 motorcyclists died on U.S. roads. In the majority of fatal multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes, the car or truck driver failed to see the motorcycle. The motorcycle was there. The driver's eyes did not find it.

The most common fatal scenario has a name: the left-turn collision. A car or truck turns left at an intersection, directly into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. The car driver either did not see the motorcycle at all, or saw it but misjudged its speed. Motorcycles are small and narrow, and the human brain is not well calibrated to judge the approach speed of small objects. Studies show that drivers consistently underestimate how quickly a motorcycle is approaching.

Why motorcycles are hard to see

A motorcycle is roughly two feet wide, compared to six feet for a passenger car. This narrow profile is easily hidden behind a windshield pillar (the A-pillar), a side mirror, a roadside sign, another vehicle, or even a tree at the roadside. A visual scan that catches every car at an intersection may miss a motorcycle because the brain is pattern-matching for car-sized objects and the motorcycle does not trigger the same recognition.

Motorcycles also behave differently than cars in ways that can surprise drivers who are not expecting them. They can decelerate rapidly without brake lights when the rider downshifts. They may change position within their lane to avoid road hazards, adjust visibility, or set up for a turn. They accelerate faster than most cars and can appear to "come out of nowhere" when they were actually traveling at a consistent speed that the driver underestimated.

How to drive safely around motorcycles

  • At intersections, look specifically for motorcycles before turning. This is the single most effective behavior. Before turning left, scan the oncoming traffic deliberately for small, narrow profiles. Look twice. A motorcycle that was hidden behind a car may become visible on the second look. Do not begin your turn until you are certain the path is clear.
  • Give a full lane. A motorcycle is legally entitled to the full width of its lane. Do not share a lane with a motorcycle, and do not pass a motorcycle within the same lane. The rider may move to different positions within the lane for visibility, wind, road surface, or turning preparation. All of these lane positions are legal and intentional.
  • Increase following distance to three to four seconds. Motorcycles stop faster than cars because of their lighter weight and high braking power relative to mass. Following too closely means you have less time to react if the motorcycle stops suddenly, and a rear-end collision with a motorcycle is catastrophic for the rider.
  • Check blind spots before every lane change. A full head turn catches what mirrors miss. This applies to all road users but is most critical for motorcycles because of their narrow profile. A motorcycle can sit entirely within your mirror's blind spot.
  • Watch for road hazards. Potholes, gravel, wet leaves, wet metal plates, railroad tracks, oil slicks, and painted lane markings that your car crosses without noticing can cause a motorcycle to lose control. If you see a rider swerve, they are avoiding something your car would have rolled over without issue.
  • Give extra space in bad weather. Rain, wind, and cold all affect motorcycles more severely than cars. Wet roads reduce motorcycle braking performance, crosswinds push them laterally, and cold reduces tire grip. On days with poor conditions, give every motorcycle extra room.
  • Check before opening your car door. On streets with parallel parking, look in the side mirror and over your shoulder before opening the driver's door. "Dooring" is when a parked driver opens a door into the path of a passing cyclist or motorcyclist. At even moderate speed, the impact is severe.

Lane splitting and lane filtering

Lane splitting, where a motorcycle rides between lanes of slow or stopped traffic, is legal in California and a few other states, with more states considering legislation. Lane filtering, where motorcycles move to the front of stopped traffic at a red light, is legal in a growing number of states.

If you drive in a state where lane splitting is legal, check your mirrors before changing lanes in slow traffic. A motorcycle may be approaching between lanes. Do not intentionally block a lane-splitting motorcycle. Where lane splitting is illegal, do not expect motorcycles between lanes, but still check before changing lanes in congested traffic.

Vulnerable road users

Bicycles and e-bikes.

Bicycles have the same legal right to the road as motor vehicles in all 50 states. Cyclists generally ride near the right edge of the lane but are legally permitted to use the full lane, and there are specific situations where taking the full lane is the correct and safest choice: when the lane is too narrow for a car to pass with safe clearance, when avoiding road hazards, when approaching a left turn, and when passing through intersections. Understanding why a cyclist is in the center of the lane prevents the frustration that leads to dangerous passing.

In 2022, 1,105 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the United States, according to NHTSA. The majority involved a motor vehicle driver who failed to yield the right of way to the cyclist. Many crashes happened at intersections.

The three-foot rule (and when it is four)

When passing a cyclist, provide at least three feet of clearance between the widest point of your vehicle (including mirrors) and the nearest point of the cyclist. The measurement is vehicle-to-cyclist, not wheel-to-cyclist. Many states codify this as law. Some states, including several that have updated their statutes in recent years, require four feet.

If the lane is too narrow to pass a cyclist with three feet of clearance while staying entirely in your lane, you must wait until you can move partially or fully into the adjacent lane. This is not optional, and it is not the cyclist's fault that the lane is narrow. A few seconds of patience prevents a collision that changes two lives. If there is oncoming traffic, wait for a gap just as you would wait to pass any slow-moving vehicle on a two-lane road.

Collision patterns to prevent

The right hook

A driver overtakes a cyclist, then immediately turns right, cutting across the cyclist's path. The cyclist, traveling straight in the bike lane or along the right edge, collides with the turning vehicle's right side. Prevention: check your right-side mirror and look over your right shoulder before turning right at any intersection, especially after passing a cyclist. Yield to any cyclist who is alongside you or approaching from behind.

The left cross

A driver turns left across the path of an oncoming cyclist, identical to the left-turn motorcycle collision. The driver either did not see the cyclist or underestimated their speed. Prevention: before turning left, scan oncoming traffic specifically for cyclists. They may be closer and moving faster than they appear, especially e-bike riders.

Dooring

A person in a parked car opens the driver-side door into the path of a passing cyclist. At even moderate cycling speed, the impact with an open car door causes serious injuries. Prevention: before opening your door on the traffic side, check the side mirror and look over your left shoulder. The Dutch Reach technique, opening the door with your far hand (right hand for the driver's door), forces you to turn your body and look behind naturally.

The rear-end overtake

A driver overtakes a cyclist from behind with insufficient clearance, often because the driver did not see the cyclist until the last moment, did not move over, or misjudged the clearance needed. Prevention: move into the adjacent lane or at least move to the far side of your lane when passing. Give at least three feet. Do not try to squeeze past in a narrow lane.

E-bikes

Electric bicycles travel faster than traditional bicycles, typically 15 to 28 mph depending on class, and riders may include people who are less experienced with cycling in traffic. Class 3 e-bikes, in particular, can travel at speeds comparable to city traffic. Do not underestimate the closing speed of an e-bike rider when judging gaps for turning or lane changes.

E-bikes follow the same road rules as bicycles in most jurisdictions. Give them the same space and the same respect. Their speed makes the consequences of a collision with a car more severe than with a traditional bicycle, and the same collision patterns apply.

Children on bicycles

Children are the least predictable cyclists on the road. They may ride on sidewalks and enter crosswalks or driveways without looking. They may ride against traffic. They may swerve to avoid real or imagined obstacles. They may be unable to hear or process traffic around them. In residential areas, near parks, and around schools, drive as if a child on a bicycle could appear from any driveway, gap between parked cars, or side street at any moment. Reduce speed and increase scanning.

The most vulnerable

Pedestrians.

In 2022, 7,522 pedestrians were killed by motor vehicles in the United States, the highest number in over 40 years according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. Pedestrian fatalities have increased significantly over the past decade while overall traffic fatalities have remained relatively flat. The reasons are multiple: more distracted drivers, more distracted pedestrians, larger vehicles with higher front profiles, and higher vehicle speeds in urban areas.

Over 75% of pedestrian fatalities occur in dark conditions, according to NHTSA. The combination of reduced visibility, impaired drivers on the road at night, and pedestrians in dark clothing creates a lethal environment. Most of the remaining fatalities occur at or near intersections during daylight hours, where the driver failed to yield the right of way.

Right of way at crosswalks

Pedestrians have the right of way at all marked crosswalks. They also have the right of way at all intersections without marked crosswalks. These are called implied or unmarked crosswalks, and they exist at every intersection by default unless specifically prohibited by local law. The absence of painted lines does not mean the absence of a crosswalk.

When a pedestrian is in or approaching a crosswalk with the intent to cross, you must stop and wait. Do not wave them through and then start moving while they are still in the roadway. Do not pass another vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk, because there may be a pedestrian hidden from your view by the stopped vehicle. Multiple-threat crashes, where a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle in the second lane after the first lane has stopped, are a documented and preventable collision pattern.

Specific pedestrian populations

  • Children are the most unpredictable pedestrians. They may dart into the street from between parked cars, chase a ball, ride a scooter off a curb, or misjudge vehicle speed and distance. Children under 10 have limited peripheral vision, limited ability to judge the speed of approaching vehicles, and may not understand that a driver cannot see them. In school zones, residential neighborhoods, parks, and playgrounds, drive as if a child could appear at any moment.
  • Elderly pedestrians may walk more slowly than the pedestrian signal timing allows. A crosswalk timed for a walking speed of 3.5 feet per second may not provide enough time for an older person walking at 2.5 feet per second. If you see an elderly pedestrian who has not completed their crossing when the signal changes, wait. They have the right to finish crossing.
  • Distracted pedestrians looking at phones, wearing headphones, or engaged in conversation may step into the road without checking for traffic. This does not change their legal right of way at crosswalks, and it does not reduce your obligation to stop. Anticipate that pedestrians near intersections may not be paying attention.
  • Pedestrians with disabilities may use wheelchairs, walkers, white canes, or guide dogs. They may cross more slowly, have limited visibility, or be unable to hear approaching vehicles. Yield completely and wait until they have cleared your travel lane before proceeding.
  • Runners and joggers may run in the road, particularly on roads without sidewalks. They typically run against traffic (facing oncoming vehicles), which is the recommended practice. They may wear headphones and not hear your vehicle. Give them the same clearance you would give a cyclist.

Visibility after dark

A pedestrian in dark clothing on an unlit road is virtually invisible to a driver until the headlights illuminate them at close range. On low beam, headlights illuminate roughly 250 feet ahead. At 40 mph, your stopping distance is approximately 190 feet. That leaves roughly 60 feet of margin, which is less than one second of reaction time. On high beam, visibility extends to roughly 400 feet, doubling the margin.

In residential areas, near bars and entertainment districts, near transit stops, and on roads without sidewalks, reduce speed after dark and increase scanning for pedestrian shapes at the edges of your headlight range. Your vehicle's automatic emergency braking system, if equipped, provides a backup, but pedestrian detection is less reliable at night, especially for pedestrians in dark clothing.

Yield and clear

Emergency vehicles.

When an emergency vehicle approaches with activated lights and sirens, all drivers are required by law to yield the right of way. The response is simple, but many drivers panic, freeze, or make unpredictable moves that create more danger. Knowing the procedure before the moment arrives turns a five-second task into a five-second task instead of a panicked guess.

The yield procedure

  1. 1. Check your mirrors. Determine where the emergency vehicle is coming from and which direction it is traveling. Sirens can echo off buildings and overpasses, making the direction ambiguous until you see the vehicle.
  2. 2. Signal right. Let other drivers know your intention so they can do the same. A coordinated response is safer than individual improvisation.
  3. 3. Move to the right side of the road. Pull as far right as safely possible. On a multi-lane road, move to the right-most lane and then to the right shoulder if there is room. On a two-lane road, move to the right shoulder or as far right as the road allows.
  4. 4. Stop completely. Come to a full stop once you are as far right as you can safely go. Leave the engine running and keep your seatbelt on. Turn the radio down so you can hear if additional vehicles are approaching.
  5. 5. Wait. Remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed and the road ahead is clear. Check for additional emergency vehicles before pulling back into traffic. Fire, EMS, and police often travel in groups: a fire engine may be followed by an ambulance, or multiple police units may respond together.

Specific situations

  • If you are in an intersection, clear the intersection first, then pull over. Do not stop in the middle of an intersection. If the light is red and you cannot clear the intersection, remain stopped. The emergency vehicle will navigate around you.
  • On a divided highway with a physical median, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the emergency vehicle must pull over. A raised median, concrete barrier, or grass median of five or more feet separates the directions of travel and the emergency vehicle will not cross into oncoming traffic.
  • On a multi-lane highway without a median, all traffic in both directions must yield. The emergency vehicle may use the center of the road or the oncoming lanes.
  • If you hear sirens but cannot see the vehicle, slow down, turn down the radio, and scan all directions. The echo effect in urban areas can make a siren sound like it is coming from the opposite direction. Do not proceed through an intersection at full speed if you hear a siren and cannot locate it.
  • Do not follow an emergency vehicle closely. Most states prohibit following within 500 feet of an emergency vehicle responding to a call. The vehicle may stop suddenly, back up, or make unexpected maneuvers. Other traffic may be yielding in unpredictable ways around the vehicle.

Move-over laws

Every state in the U.S. has a move-over law that requires drivers to slow down and, where possible, move over one lane when passing a stopped emergency vehicle, tow truck, or road crew with active warning lights on the roadside. Many states have expanded these laws to include utility vehicles, Department of Transportation vehicles, and any stopped vehicle with hazard lights activated.

The consequences for violating move-over laws are significant: fines range from $100 to over $500 in most states, and increase substantially if a worker is struck. Some states impose license suspension for repeat violations. Beyond the legal consequences, the purpose is straightforward: police officers, firefighters, tow truck operators, and highway workers are struck and killed on roadsides every year. The extra lane of space protects their lives.

Special vehicles

School buses, farm equipment, and work zones.

School buses

When a school bus displays flashing red lights and extends its stop arm, all traffic in both directions must stop on an undivided road, regardless of the number of lanes. On a divided highway with a raised median, physical barrier, or unpaved median of five or more feet, vehicles traveling in the opposite direction are generally not required to stop. Laws vary by state. Know your state's specific law before you need it.

Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm retracts. Children may be crossing the road, and they may not look both ways. The most dangerous zone around a school bus is the 10-foot area on all sides, particularly the front of the bus, where children cross the road and are below the driver's line of sight. A child who drops something in front of the bus and bends down to pick it up is invisible to the bus driver.

The signal sequence: yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Begin slowing. Red flashing lights and the extended stop arm mean the bus is stopped and children are loading or unloading. Stop and wait. Fines for passing a stopped school bus range from $250 to over $1,000 in most states, with license suspension possible for repeat offenses. Many jurisdictions have added cameras to school bus stop arms to automatically photograph violators.

Farm equipment

Tractors, combines, grain carts, sprayers, and other farm equipment on public roads are legal and common in agricultural areas. They travel 15 to 25 mph, are often wider than a standard lane, and the operators may have limited rearward visibility and limited ability to hear approaching traffic over engine noise. You will encounter them on two-lane roads with limited passing opportunities, typically during planting season (spring) and harvest season (fall).

Look for the slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem: a reflective orange triangle with a dark red border displayed on the back of any vehicle that travels at 25 mph or less on public roads. This includes tractors, combines, horse-drawn vehicles, and some construction equipment. The emblem is your signal to reduce speed and prepare for a significant speed differential.

  • Do not pass unless you have clear visibility. You need a legal passing zone, a clear view of oncoming traffic for at least a quarter mile, and enough distance to complete the pass before meeting oncoming traffic or reaching a curve. Farm equipment is wider than it appears from behind, and the pass takes longer than you expect.
  • Watch for left turns into fields. Farm equipment may turn left into a field entrance without warning or with minimal signaling. The operator may not be able to hear your vehicle approaching. If the equipment slows or the driver looks to the left, anticipate a turn and do not attempt to pass.
  • Equipment may extend beyond its visible profile. Attachments, towed implements, and folded equipment may extend beyond the edges of the tractor or be difficult to see from behind. Give extra clearance when passing.
  • Be patient. The farmer is doing work that produces the food supply and would prefer not to be on the road. Plan extra time during planting and harvest seasons.

Work zones and construction

Work zone crashes kill over 800 people per year in the United States. The majority of fatalities are drivers and passengers, not workers, but worker fatalities are also significant. Fines are typically doubled in active work zones, and some states impose additional penalties.

  • Slow down before the work zone, not in it. Speed reduction signs are placed in advance for a reason. Braking inside the zone, where workers may be steps from the travel lane, is more dangerous than arriving at the reduced speed.
  • Merge early and cooperatively. When a lane closure is ahead, merge when signs indicate rather than racing to the closure point and forcing your way in. In some states, the "zipper merge" (merging at the closure point) is the recommended method. Follow the posted instructions. Either method works; aggressive, unpredictable lane changes do not.
  • Watch for workers, flaggers, and equipment. Construction workers may be in or near the travel lane. Flaggers have legal authority to control traffic. Follow their signals as you would a traffic light. Equipment may enter the travel lane, back across it, or swing loads over it.
  • Expect the unexpected. Lane shifts, temporary signals, uneven pavement, gravel, steel plates, narrow lanes, and sudden stops are all normal in work zones. Maintain extra following distance and stay focused.

Reporting and responsibility

When to report a hazard.

Part of sharing the road is knowing when to involve authorities. Reporting dangerous driving protects every road user, including people you will never meet. These reports are not overreactions. They are the community equivalent of sharing the road: taking responsibility for safety beyond your own vehicle.

  • Aggressive or reckless driving. If you see a driver weaving through traffic, tailgating dangerously, passing on the shoulder, running red lights, or driving aggressively, call 911 or the highway patrol non-emergency number. Provide the vehicle description, license plate if you can read it safely (have a passenger do this), your location, and the direction of travel. Do not follow the vehicle or engage with the driver. Let law enforcement handle it.
  • Suspected impaired driving. Weaving across lanes, crossing the center line, driving significantly below the speed limit, making very wide turns, driving without headlights at night, or stopping for no apparent reason in traffic. Call 911. Impaired drivers kill over 10,000 people per year in the United States. Your call may save a life.
  • Debris on the road. Large objects, fallen cargo, vehicle parts, or tire treads on the roadway create hazards for every road user, especially motorcyclists and cyclists. Call the highway patrol, use the state's 511 system, or report through a highway assistance app if your state offers one.
  • Damaged traffic signals, signs, or road markings. A broken traffic signal at a busy intersection, a missing stop sign, or obliterated lane markings at a curve create ongoing hazards. Report to your local public works department or the non-emergency police line. These reports are how repairs get prioritized.
  • After a collision. If you witness or are involved in a collision, stop safely, call 911, and provide aid if you are trained. Do not leave the scene. Exchange information with other involved drivers. Your vehicle emergency kit should include a pen and paper or a printable accident information card for this moment. Note the time, location, vehicles involved, license plates, insurance information, and names and contact information of any witnesses.
