Montana's proven performers.
Eastern MT soils are fertile under irrigation but alkaline — add sulfur if needed. Western valley soils are more productive and need less amendment. Short growing seasons across most of the state — choose short-season varieties. MSU Extension county offices are the authoritative source for Montana-specific guidance.

Montana soils vary significantly. The Flathead Valley and Bitterroot Valley have productive loam soils. Eastern Montana's plains have fertile but dry soils that are highly productive under irrigation. The Hi-Line has thin, alkaline soils. Mountain valley soils are thin and rocky with very short growing seasons.
