Wasatch Front clay lake soils need gypsum and compost — they compact badly and drain poorly. Southern UT desert soils need sulfur to lower pH and heavy compost. Mulch aggressively in summer heat. USU Extension county offices are the best Utah-specific resource.
Know your soil
Utah soils range from alkaline desert soils in the south and west to clay-heavy lake soils along the Wasatch Front (former lakebed soils from ancient Lake Bonneville). Most Wasatch Front soils are clay or clay loam and need organic matter for drainage. Southern Utah soils are sandy, alkaline, and need sulfur and compost. The Cache Valley in northern Utah has more productive agricultural soils.
