Roadside Emergency Kits

Everything that should be in the trunk before you need it, and how to tell a solid kit from a bag of plastic.

You are forty minutes from home on a two-lane road when the dashboard lights up. The shoulder is narrow, traffic is steady, and the sun went down an hour ago. What happens next depends almost entirely on what is already in the trunk.

A vehicle emergency kit is not a hobby purchase. It is the difference between a managed inconvenience and a genuine safety problem. Ready.gov, NHTSA, the National Safety Council, and the American Red Cross all recommend keeping one in every vehicle, and none of them agree on exactly the same list, because the right kit depends on where you drive, how far, and in what weather.

This guide walks through what belongs in the trunk, what the pre-built kits actually include, where they fall short, and how to build or upgrade a kit that works for your vehicle and your climate, year-round.

Five questions about your driving

Answer these before looking at any product. They determine what your kit actually needs to contain.

How far do you typically drive from home?

A fifteen-minute commuter and a rural driver who regularly covers sixty miles on back roads need different kits. The farther your typical drive, the more self-sufficient the kit needs to be.

What is the worst weather you drive in?

A kit for a Minnesota winter and a kit for an Arizona summer share a core, but the seasonal layer is different. Snow and cold demand traction aids, insulation, and a way to stay warm. Heat demands extra water, sun protection, and awareness that trunk temperatures can damage batteries and medications.

Can you change a tire?

If the answer is not a confident yes, your kit needs either the tools and the practice, or a reliable way to call for help and stay visible while you wait. Many newer vehicles ship without a spare tire, which changes the equation.

Who rides with you?

Children, elderly passengers, and pets each add items. Car seats restrict exit routes. Medications need to be duplicated. A kit for a solo commuter and a kit for a family of four are not the same kit.

How much trunk space can you give up?

A full-size kit in a hard case takes about the space of a carry-on suitcase. A compact kit in a soft bag fits behind a seat. The trade-off is real, and knowing your space constraint before shopping prevents buying a kit that migrates to the garage.

The foundation

What the official sources recommend

Four organizations publish vehicle emergency kit recommendations. None of them agree on exactly the same list, which is informative in itself: the right kit depends on context, not on a single checklist.

Ready.gov (FEMA) lists jumper cables, flares or a reflective triangle, an ice scraper, a car cell phone charger, a blanket, a map, and cat litter or sand for tire traction as the vehicle-specific extras on top of a standard household emergency supply kit.1

NHTSA recommends a cell phone and charger, first aid kit, flashlight, flares and a white flag, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, jack and ground mat, work gloves and a change of clothes, basic repair tools and duct tape, and water.2

The National Safety Council adds a properly inflated spare tire with wrench and jack, a reflective vest, a fire extinguisher, a compass, nonperishable food, and warm clothing. They recommend checking your kit every six months and replacing expired items.3

The American Red Cross recommends a storm and severe weather car kit with survival supplies including gloves and hand warmers, an emergency Mylar sleeping bag and blanket, food, water, a light stick, a first aid kit, and a rain poncho.4

The overlap tells you what is non-negotiable: a way to signal (triangles or flares), a way to see (flashlight), a way to call for help (charged phone), a way to handle a dead battery (jumper cables or a jump starter), basic first aid, and enough water and warmth to wait safely. Everything beyond that core is climate, distance, and household specific.

The decision

Pre-built kit or custom build?

Most pre-built roadside emergency kits sold online fall into two categories: a $25 to $50 bag with lightweight versions of the basics, or a $75 to $150 kit that adds a jump starter or air compressor. Both have the same structural problem: they are designed to fit a price point, not a climate or a vehicle.

The typical pre-built kit includes a set of jumper cables (often 8-gauge, which struggles with larger engines), a small flashlight, a reflective triangle or vest, a basic first aid pouch, zip ties, electrical tape, and sometimes a tire pressure gauge. What they rarely include: water, food, warm layers, a real set of work gloves, or anything sized for cold weather. Many include items you already have (a phone charger cable) and omit items you genuinely need (a way to stay warm for two hours).

The NSC recommends checking your kit every six months regardless, which means you will be opening it and modifying the contents. The most practical approach for most households is to start with a quality pre-built kit for the storage case and the small items you would rather not source individually, then replace any lightweight tools with full-size versions and add the climate-specific items your region demands.

What to look for in a pre-built kit:

A durable storage case or bag with organization, not just a drawstring sack. Jumper cables that are at least 10-gauge and 12 feet long. A flashlight with standard batteries, not a built-in rechargeable that you cannot replace. A reflective triangle that meets FMVSS 125 specifications (the triangles marked DOT). A first aid kit with actual bandaging supplies rather than just adhesive strips.

What you will almost certainly need to add:

Drinking water (at least one liter per person who regularly rides in the vehicle). A warm layer and a blanket, stored in a compression bag. A high-visibility vest. Work gloves. A tire inflator if your vehicle does not carry a full-size spare. Nonperishable food. Any medications your household requires. A paper map of your regular driving area.

The gear

Core tools, explained

Visibility: warning triangles and vests

Reflective warning triangles are the most effective way to alert approaching traffic to a disabled vehicle, especially at night and around curves. FMVSS 125 (49 CFR 571.125) sets the federal performance standard for warning triangles: each side must be 17 to 22 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide, with both fluorescent orange and red reflective material on both faces.5 Triangles marked DOT must meet this standard. The standard also requires that triangles remain upright in wind gusts, which eliminates the ultra-lightweight plastic versions. A set of three DOT-compliant triangles in a hard case runs $15 to $30.

A high-visibility vest makes you visible when you step out of the vehicle. The NSC and Red Cross both recommend one. An ANSI/ISEA 107-compliant Class 2 vest provides 360-degree visibility and costs under $10. Keep it on top of the kit, not buried underneath.

Power: jump starters vs. jumper cables

Traditional jumper cables require a second vehicle and someone who knows which terminal goes where. They are reliable, have no battery to maintain, and cost $20 to $40 for a quality 10-gauge set at least 12 feet long. Shorter or thinner cables struggle with larger engines and longer reaches.

A lithium jump starter eliminates the need for a second vehicle. Modern units the size of a paperback book can start a V8 engine multiple times on a single charge and double as a USB power bank. Prices range from $50 to $150. However, lithium-ion batteries carry real storage considerations. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued multiple recalls for portable lithium battery products that can overheat and cause fires.6

If you keep a lithium jump starter in the vehicle: store it in the cabin rather than the trunk during extreme heat, keep the charge between 40 and 80 percent for long-term storage, recharge it at least every three months, and choose a unit with built-in reverse polarity protection, short-circuit protection, and overcharge protection. Many households carry both: a jump starter for self-rescue and a set of cables as a backup that never expires.

Tires: inflators and sealant

Many vehicles built after 2010 no longer include a full-size spare tire. Some carry a compact spare; others carry only a tire inflator and sealant kit. Before buying any tire-related gear, check what your vehicle actually has. Open the trunk or look under the cargo floor.

A portable tire inflator that runs from the 12-volt outlet fills a low tire in five to ten minutes and costs $30 to $70. A built-in digital gauge eliminates guesswork. Choose one rated for at least your vehicle's recommended tire pressure (typically 30 to 35 PSI for passenger cars; check the driver's door jamb sticker). If your vehicle carries no spare at all, a tire sealant canister handles punctures in the tread but not sidewall damage. It is a temporary fix to get you to a tire shop, not a repair.

Escape: the tool you hope to never use

A vehicle escape tool combines a spring-loaded window breaker and a seatbelt cutter in a device the size of a marker. It exists for submerged or burning vehicles where the doors will not open and the seatbelt will not release. Mount it within arm's reach of the driver's seat, not in the trunk. A tool in the glovebox or clipped to the sun visor is reachable. A tool in a bag behind the rear seats is not. Quality units cost $10 to $20.

Climate adaptation

Seasonal layers on top of the core

Your core kit stays in the vehicle year-round. The seasonal layer changes twice a year, timed to the same six-month check the NSC recommends.

Cold-weather additions

A wool or fleece blanket (not just a Mylar sheet, though those pack well as a backup). Warm hat, insulated gloves, and a spare base layer. Chemical hand warmers with a current expiration date. A folding snow shovel. Cat litter, sand, or traction mats for getting unstuck. An ice scraper and snow brush. Windshield washer fluid rated for your winter temperatures. Ready.gov specifically recommends cat litter or sand for tire traction.1

Warm-weather additions

Extra water, at least double your cold-weather supply. Sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen. A battery-powered fan or a hand fan. An insulated cooler bag for any medications that are heat-sensitive. NHTSA notes that hot temperatures accelerate the degradation of rubber belts and hoses, so a pre-trip check is more important in summer.2 Move any lithium battery devices from the trunk to the cabin.

What goes wrong

Common failures in roadside kits

The most common failure in a vehicle emergency kit is not a missing item. It is an item that was there but no longer works because nobody checked it. Dead batteries in the flashlight. Expired food. Water bottles that split in a freeze. A jump starter whose charge drained to zero over twelve months. Chemical hand warmers past their expiration date.

The second most common failure is placement. A window breaker in the trunk does not help when the car is in water. A first aid kit under three bags of groceries does not help when someone is bleeding. Kit organization matters: put the items you need fastest on top or in a separate pouch, and mount the escape tool where the driver can reach it without unbuckling.

The third failure is size. Pre-built kits often include miniature versions of critical tools: a 4-inch flashlight with a button cell, 8-gauge jumper cables that are 6 feet long, a first aid pouch with six adhesive strips and nothing else. These meet a price point but fail in the field. A flashlight needs standard batteries you can replace. Jumper cables need enough gauge and length to reach between two vehicles parked end to end. A first aid kit needs actual gauze, tape, and wound care supplies.

The NSC's recommendation to check every six months is the single most effective thing you can do for your kit. Mark it on the calendar. When daylight saving time changes, check the kit.

Upkeep

The six-month check

The NSC recommends checking your vehicle emergency kit every six months.3 Tie it to daylight saving time, spring and fall.

At each check:

Test the flashlight and replace batteries. Test the jump starter charge and top it off. Check expiration dates on food, water, medications, and chemical hand warmers. Replace any water bottles that have been through a freeze-thaw cycle. Confirm the first aid supplies are complete. Check that the tire inflator powers on and reads pressure. Verify the phone charger cable works. Swap the seasonal layer in or out.

Once a year:

Check the spare tire pressure (if your vehicle has one). Check that your vehicle's jack and lug wrench are present and functional. Replace the paper map if routes or construction have changed. Update the printed emergency contact list if phone numbers have changed. Test the window breaker on a piece of scrap tempered glass if you want to be certain, or at minimum confirm the spring mechanism fires.
