Disruptions Checklist
When a Spouse Dies Checklist. Only what truly cannot wait, and nothing that can.
This checklist covers only what truly needs attention in the first day, the calls that start the process over the following three days, and the paperwork that unfolds over the first month. Nothing here is urgent enough to rush. Come back to any section whenever you are ready for it.

Phase 1
First 24 Hours.
Almost everything else can wait. These are the few things that cannot.
What Cannot Wait
- Contact a funeral home, or follow hospital or hospice guidance
- Call the people who need to know today
- Ask someone to stay with you or check in regularly
If You Know Where
- Note the location of the will and key documents, if known
Phase 2
First 72 Hours.
These calls start processes that take time regardless of when you begin them, so starting within a few days helps.
Calls to Make
- Call Social Security to report the death and ask about survivor benefits
- Contact the life insurance company to begin a claim
- Notify banks, credit unions, and investment accounts
- Ask about veterans survivor benefits, if your spouse served
Coverage and Employer
- Address your health coverage if you were on your spouse's plan
- Notify your spouse's employer about final pay and benefits
Phase 3
First 30 Days.
The estate and the paperwork unfold over weeks, not days. Move through this at a pace that works for you.
Estate and Property
- Determine whether probate is needed for the estate
- Retitle jointly held property once you are ready
- Update your own beneficiary designations when ready
Budget
- Review the household budget once income is clear
When You Are Ready
- Cancel or transfer subscriptions and memberships when ready
- Consider grief support if and when it feels right
Phase 4
What This Could Break Next.
A few areas are easy to overlook while everything else demands attention. Each is preventable with one action.
Household Income
- Watch for a household income gap and address it early
Your Health
- Keep up with your own medical appointments and medications
Household and Family
- Keep the school informed and watch for support needs in children
- Identify household tasks your spouse managed, and who to call
