Context from the fire weather outlook published September 2 by the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System: a low tracking across the south brought rain to the St. Lawrence region and western Atlantic Canada, strengthening as it reached the relatively warm Atlantic coast, with significant rainfall and wind over the weekend and relatively prolonged rain for Newfoundland. That is consistent with alerts persisting there while the mainland provinces clear.

The Atlantic basin holds no tropical cyclones as of the National Hurricane Center's update at 5:01 AM Eastern today. For this region, which sits at the northern end of the track, that is the sentence that matters most in September.

September and October are the months when Atlantic Canada's hurricane exposure is real. Storms that reach this far north are usually transitioning from tropical to post-tropical as they arrive, and the practical consequence of that transition is worth understanding: a post-tropical storm is not a weaker storm. It is a wider one. The wind field spreads out, the strongest winds move away from the centre, and the area affected grows even as the peak number falls.

That is why a household here should read the wind and rain forecast rather than the category. A storm that arrives as post-tropical can still take down the distribution network across a wide area, and in this region that is the effect that lasts longest.

The basin is empty this morning and there is nothing to prepare against. That makes this the week to prepare with. The specific work that pays in this region: securing anything in the yard that becomes airborne, clearing the drain and gutter path so a heavy rain leaves rather than pools, and settling how the household stays warm and fed through a multi-day outage in a cool, wet week.
