Power outages are the most common emergency American households face — and the easiest to prepare for. Most of the risk is in the first 24 hours of being unprepared.

The scenario

Not just an inconvenience

A power outage is what happens when the electricity supply to your home is interrupted — for minutes, hours, or weeks. The U.S. experiences more power outages than any other developed nation. In an average year, American households lose power for roughly 8 hours. In a bad year — with a major hurricane, ice storm, or heat dome — households in affected areas can lose power for one to three weeks.

The modern household depends on electricity for more than most people realize until it's gone: refrigeration, water pumps, heating and cooling systems, medical equipment, communications, and lighting. Each of those dependencies becomes a risk when the grid is down.

The good news is that power outage preparedness is the most achievable form of household readiness. A few hours of setup and $100–$300 in supplies covers the vast majority of outage scenarios your household will realistically face.

How it escalates

The longer it lasts, the harder it gets

What a power outage actually looks like changes significantly over time. The first few hours are a nuisance. After three days, it becomes a logistics challenge. Most households hit their limits somewhere in between.

0–6hrs

Nuisance phase

Lights out, phone charging paused. Refrigerator and freezer are still safe. Most households are comfortable. This is when most outages end.

6–48hrs

Discomfort phase

Refrigerator food at risk after 4 hours. Temperature control becomes a concern. Cell towers begin to drain batteries. Households without preparation begin to feel it.

2–7days

Logistics phase

Water pressure may fail. Grocery stores close or run out of key items. Fuel lines form. Medical equipment users face real risk. Community resources begin to open.

7+days

Infrastructure phase

Water treatment may be affected. Natural gas service may be interrupted. Financial systems and commerce are disrupted. This is the 1–2% scenario — but it happens every major disaster cycle.

Before it happens

Power outage preparation

Most of this takes one afternoon. The goal is a household that can operate comfortably for 72 hours and survive for two weeks without grid power.

Water first

Store one gallon per person per day for at least three days. If you're on well water, your pump requires electricity — during an outage you have only what's in your pipes. Fill your bathtub at the first sign of a major storm.

Temperature plan

Identify one room in your home that can be heated or cooled without the main system. A wood stove, propane heater (with CO detector), or a well-shaded room with cross-ventilation. Know the plan before you need it.

Backup power — tiered

Start with power banks for phones ($30–$80). Add a portable power station for CPAP and lighting ($300–$600). A generator covers the refrigerator and more ($500–$2,000) — but requires safe outdoor operation and fuel storage.

No-cook food supply

Keep at least three days of food that requires no refrigeration and minimal or no cooking: canned goods, peanut butter, crackers, dried fruit, nuts, and shelf-stable snacks. A camp stove expands your options significantly.

Medical equipment

If anyone in your household uses powered medical equipment — CPAP, oxygen concentrator, nebulizer, electric wheelchair — contact the manufacturer for outage guidance, register with your utility for medical priority status, and plan for battery backup.

Communications

A battery or hand-crank NOAA weather radio is the most reliable information source when cell towers and internet fail. Keep a written contact list — when your phone dies, you lose access to stored numbers. Identify an out-of-area contact as your household's central communication point.

When it happens

The first 24 hours

Keep the refrigerator closed

A full refrigerator holds safe temperature for about 4 hours if unopened. A full freezer holds for 48 hours. Every time you open the door you shorten that window. Decide what you need, open once, and close.

Carbon monoxide — the invisible risk

Never run a generator, camp stove, charcoal grill, or gas range indoors or in a garage. Carbon monoxide is odorless. It kills. This is the most common cause of outage-related deaths. Generators run outside only, at least 20 feet from any opening.

Unplug major appliances

When power returns, it sometimes surges. Unplug computers, TVs, and appliances to protect them. Leave one lamp plugged in so you know when power has been restored.

Check on neighbors

Elderly neighbors, those with medical conditions, and households with infants are most vulnerable in extended outages. A knock on the door within the first few hours takes two minutes and can matter significantly if they're in trouble.

Report the outage and monitor restoration

Report your outage to your utility — they often don't know specific locations are down until customers call or use the app. Monitor restoration estimates via the utility's outage map, your NOAA radio, or text alerts if your phone has charge.

The recovery checklist

When the grid comes back, take these steps before returning to normal household operation.

Check all food for safety

Use the 40°F / 2-hour rule. If you're not sure how long something was above 40°F, discard it. Foodborne illness after an outage is common and preventable.

Plug appliances back in gradually

Restore power to appliances one at a time over several minutes to avoid stressing the circuit during the initial restoration surge.

Restock what you used

Replenish water, food, batteries, and fuel within the week. The next outage won't wait for you to be ready again.

Note what worked and what didn't

Every outage is a real-world test of your preparedness. Write down what you wished you had, and address it before the season turns.
