Infrastructure
The earthquake sequence in the Aleutians has continued. United States Geological Survey data for the past week lists a magnitude 6.3 about 84 kilometers south-southwest of Nikolski on September 3 at 11:17 UTC, followed by a magnitude 5.5 the same day, a magnitude 5.3, two magnitude 5.2 events, and numerous events between magnitude 4.5 and 4.9 in the same area. A separate magnitude 5.0 occurred about 236 kilometers east-southeast of Attu Station on September 4.
The United States Tsunami Warning Centers state that there is no tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat in effect. An information statement was issued for the magnitude 5.0 event, which is the category of message that exists specifically to say a wave is not expected.
A sequence like this is what the Aleutian arc does. It is one of the most seismically active places on earth, and a cluster of moderate events near a single location over several days is the normal expression of that rather than a departure from it. The aftershock pattern is expected to continue easing.
Five large fires are burning in Oregon and Washington, and the Northwest is the geographic area at the highest preparedness level in the country at 4. The Little Giant fire in Washington stands at 170,784 acres and 73 percent contained. In Oregon, the Big Grass fire is at 578,637 acres and 94 percent contained, the Rowe Creek Complex at 373,927 acres and 99 percent contained, the Grasshopper fire at 93,993 acres and 84 percent contained, and the Hagen fire at 61,408 acres and 54 percent contained. All five have structures threatened. In Idaho, the Moose Mountain fire is at 5,579 acres and 8 percent contained and the Crooked fire at 9,956 acres and 27 percent contained.
Those figures come from the National Interagency Fire Center report dated September 4 and are roughly a day behind this morning. The direction of travel is the encouraging part: the two largest Oregon fires are at 94 and 99 percent containment, and the national preparedness level dropped from 5 to 4, which is the first meaningful national easing in a while.
No grid emergencies or water system disruptions are reported across the four states this morning.
Public Health
Air quality is the health item across this region, and it is the one that varies most by address. The Environmental Protection Agency's AirNow service reports that wildfire smoke is affecting air quality in multiple states without naming them. Its Fire and Smoke Map at fire.airnow.gov gives a reading for a specific location, which is the only version of this question that is actually useful.
With seven large fires burning across the three lower states, smoke is worth checking rather than assuming, in either direction. Smoke travels hundreds of miles and settles into valleys overnight, so a household well away from any fire line can have a worse reading than one nearby.
The practical version is a short list. If the reading is poor, keep windows closed during the worst part of the day, run a filter in the room where people sleep, and move exercise indoors. A box fan with a filter taped to it is a real option when a purifier is not in the budget.

Whether your home, your workplace, and your child's school sit inside a mapped evacuation zone is a question the state geological survey and county emergency management have already answered on a map. The natural warning for a local event is the shaking itself rather than a siren, and the guidance is to move to high ground on foot once shaking stops.
On fire, the season is easing but not over. The Northwest remains the highest preparedness level geographic area in the country. Containment gains on the largest Oregon fires are real, and the fires at 8 and 27 percent in Idaho are the ones with the most work left.
The seasonal turn is worth noting. The calendar puts atmospheric river season in the Northwest starting in November, which is the pattern that produces this region's flooding. The stretch between fire season easing and rain season starting is the window when gutters, drains, and roof condition are easiest to deal with.
