Today's brief for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Today in Prairies

Wind gusts to 90 km/h sweep central Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan today, while the north gets its first big snow, with up to 50 cm around Wollaston Lake by Sunday. If you are on a well, fill some water containers this morning in case the power goes out.

This brief looks at the region as a whole. For conditions at your own address, see Your Local Risks →

Readiness

Active Weather

A significant fall storm is reaching all three Prairie provinces today, with damaging wind in the south and heavy snow in the north.

Environment Canada has wind warnings across central and east central Alberta, including Kneehill County, Three Hills, Lloydminster, and Vegreville, with northwest gusts to 90 kilometres an hour this morning through this evening. Wind warnings also cover southwest Saskatchewan from the Alberta border east, with gusts to 90 and above 100 in the Cypress Hills, expanding eastward this evening. Expect difficult driving and possible power outages. High-sided vehicles will be pushed around.

In the north, snowfall warnings cover the Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo area of Alberta for 10 to 40 centimetres, and northwest Saskatchewan including Uranium City, Stony Rapids, and La Loche for 20 to 40 centimetres. Winter storm warnings cover Wollaston Lake and Southend in Saskatchewan, with 30 to 50 centimetres by Sunday. In northern Manitoba, winter storm warnings cover Lynn Lake, Leaf Rapids, Brochet, Pukatawagan, and Tadoule Lake, with a watch for Churchill: 20 to 40 centimetres of snow, freezing rain, and gusts possibly above 90.

Southern Manitoba, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, and Edmonton are not under warnings this morning.

Infrastructure

Environment Canada says local utility outages are possible in the wind warning areas. If you rely on a well pump or electric heat in rural Alberta or Saskatchewan, fill a few containers with water this morning and charge phones before the wind peaks.

Public Health

No public health advisories found for the Prairies.

Air quality readings for your community are at weather.gc.ca/airquality, which we do not summarize here.

Watch Item

The northern storm lasts through Saturday and tapers off Sunday. For the south, winds ease overnight as the strongest gusts move east. This is the first real winter storm of the season for the north, and roads may close. If you have travel planned between Saturday and Sunday in northern Saskatchewan or Manitoba, plan to wait it out.

In Alberta's Forest Protection Area, a free fire permit is still required for any burning other than a campfire until October 31. Permits are at firepermits.alberta.ca.
