October 2011
On October 29, 2011, a heavy wet snowstorm hit Connecticut while the trees still had their leaves. The weight of snow on full canopies snapped trees across the state. Over 830,000 customers lost power. Some waited 11 days for restoration.
The storm was not unprecedented in snowfall. It was unprecedented in timing. Emergency response was overwhelmed not by the storm itself but by the sheer volume of downed trees blocking every road. Crews could not reach the outages because the outages blocked the roads.
