September 2024
When Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region in September 2024, few people in north Georgia were thinking about hurricanes. By the time the storm reached the Blue Ridge, it was still carrying enormous amounts of tropical moisture. The rain fell on steep terrain saturated from earlier storms. The result was catastrophic flooding.
Communities along the Toccoa River, the Chattooga, and dozens of smaller creeks experienced flooding that exceeded anything in living memory. Roads washed out. Bridges collapsed. Some communities were isolated for days.
The lesson for Georgia is geographic: the state's hazard profile does not stop at the Fall Line. Tropical systems carry destructive energy deep inland, and mountain terrain amplifies the flooding. Every region of Georgia needs a water plan, not just the coast.
