On May 19, 2020, the Edenville Dam in Midland County failed after days of heavy rain. Hours later, the Sanford Dam downstream failed as well. The combined flood forced the evacuation of 10,000 people and inundated downtown Midland under 9 feet of water. A Dow Chemical superfund site was partially flooded.
The dams had been flagged for safety concerns years earlier. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission had revoked Edenville's license in 2018 over inadequate spillway capacity. The failure was not a surprise to engineers. It was a surprise to the families downstream.
For Michigan households near dams, the lesson is direct: know if you live downstream of a dam, know your evacuation route, and understand that dam safety is not guaranteed by the dam's existence. Michigan has over 1,000 dams. Not all of them are in good condition.
