Western mountains

Asheville, Boone, Hendersonville, the Blue Ridge. Landslides, flash flooding in narrow valleys, ice storms, and the lesson of Helene: tropical systems don't stop at the foothills. Winter isolation when mountain roads ice over is measured in days, not hours.

Piedmont

Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, the Triad and the Triangle. Ice storms are the signature hazard. A quarter-inch of ice brings down trees and power lines across counties. Tornadoes in spring, severe thunderstorms in summer, and the occasional hurricane remnant that refuses to weaken inland.

Coastal plain

Wilmington, Jacksonville, the Outer Banks, the Tidewater. Hurricane country from June through November. Storm surge, inland flooding from slow-moving systems, and the question every coastal household answers before each season: at what category do we leave? Florence sat over the coast for days. Matthew flooded rivers that hadn't crested in a century.

Hurricanes

Flooding

The most common disaster in North Carolina. Flash flooding in mountain valleys, river flooding in the Piedmont, coastal flooding from storm surge. Standard homeowner's insurance does not cover flood.

Ice storms cause more damage in NC than snow. A quarter inch of ice accumulation downs trees and power lines. The Piedmont is the primary ice zone. Mountain communities face isolation when roads close.

Tornadoes

NC averages 19 tornadoes per year, concentrated in the eastern counties and Piedmont during spring. The state has two tornado seasons: March through May and November. Tropical system tornadoes are a separate risk along the coast.

Heat waves

North Carolina humidity makes heat dangerous before the thermometer says so. Heat index values regularly exceed 105 in the Sandhills and coastal plain. The elderly and those without AC are most at risk. Know your county's cooling centers.

Western NC's fire season peaks in fall when leaf litter dries and winds pick up. The 2016 Party Rock Fire near Lake Lure burned over 7,000 acres. Defensible space and an evacuation plan are essential for mountain households.

The lesson of Helene

No part of North Carolina is immune.

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and tracked north through the Appalachians. Western North Carolina, a region that rarely thought about hurricanes, experienced catastrophic flooding. Asheville, Swannanoa, Chimney Rock, and communities across Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell counties saw damage that will take years to rebuild.

The lesson is not that mountain communities should fear hurricanes. The lesson is that the hazard profile of any region is not static. Tropical moisture follows river valleys into the mountains. Flash flooding happens faster in steep terrain. Roads that are the only way in and out become the first thing lost.
