September 21, 1938
On September 21, 1938, a Category 3 hurricane made landfall on Long Island and crossed directly into New England. The storm surge, amplified by Narragansett Bay's funnel shape, pushed 15 feet of water into downtown Providence. Cars floated down Weybosset Street. The entire commercial district was submerged. Across New England, nearly 700 people died.
After the 1938 hurricane, Providence built a hurricane barrier across the Providence River, completed in 1966. The barrier has reduced surge impacts from subsequent storms but has never been tested by a storm as powerful as 1938. Climate models suggest storms of that intensity will reach New England more frequently.
For every Rhode Island household near the Bay, the preparation includes knowing your evacuation zone, carrying flood insurance, and understanding that the hurricane barrier is not a guarantee. It reduces risk. It does not eliminate it.
