Cold is patient. It waits.
When the furnace stops in January, a house loses heat slowly at first, then faster. For an older adult, the window between uncomfortable and dangerous can be surprisingly short. This guide covers how to stay warm safely and when to leave.

Your body loses heat faster now.
The National Institute on Aging explains that older adults can lose body heat faster than when they were younger. Several chronic conditions common in older adults make this worse: diabetes can prevent blood from flowing normally to provide warmth, thyroid problems can affect the body's ability to maintain normal temperature, and Parkinson's disease or arthritis can make it physically difficult to put on more clothing or get to a warmer room.
Hypothermia, a body temperature below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, is a medical emergency that can cause heart attack, kidney damage, and liver damage. The NIA emphasizes that hypothermia affects the brain and makes it difficult to think clearly, which means an older adult may not realize they need help. It can even occur at relatively cool indoor temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit if a person becomes chilled.
Some medications, including certain cold medicines available over the counter, can also affect body heat. If you take multiple medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether any of them affect your ability to stay warm.

When the heating system fails, trying to keep the whole house warm is a losing strategy. Pick one room and bring everything into it.
Choosing the room
Pick a small interior room with few windows. Smaller rooms hold body heat better. Interior rooms lose less heat to the outside. If you have a south-facing room that gets daytime sun, it will gain solar heat during the day.
Close the doors to all other rooms. Stuff towels under the doors to block drafts. If windows are drafty, cover them with heavy blankets, plastic sheeting, or even shower curtains. You are trying to keep a small space warm, not an entire house.
If you have a fireplace with a working flue, that room may be the best choice. If you do not have a working fireplace, the smallest comfortable room is your best option.
What to bring in
- Bedding: sleeping bag or heavy blankets, pillows
- Medications and medical equipment
- Phone and charger (or power bank)
- Water and no-cook food
- Flashlights and battery lantern
- Extra warm clothing and socks
- Portable emergency toilet (bucket/commode) so you do not need to leave the warm room
Safe supplemental heating
What you can use and what will kill you.
The CPSC estimates that portable space heaters are involved in about 1,700 fires per year, resulting in approximately 80 deaths and 160 injuries annually. They can also present a hyperthermia hazard to seniors who may not react to rising ambient temperature. Carbon monoxide from improper heating kills dozens more. These are preventable deaths, every one of them.
What you can use safely
- Electric space heater (if you have backup power): Safest option. Use one tested to current safety standards with a tip-over shutoff. Plug directly into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip. Keep at least three feet from bedding, curtains, and furniture (CPSC)
- Fireplace with a clean, inspected flue: Have the chimney inspected annually. Use a fireplace screen. Open the damper fully before lighting. Keep flammable items away from the opening
- Body heat and insulation: Layered clothing, a sleeping bag rated for cold weather, a warm hat (you lose significant heat through your head), and warm socks. Two people sharing body heat in the same bed or under the same blankets is one of the most effective no-equipment warming methods
What will produce carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. You will not know it is in the room until you are disoriented, and by then it may be too late. The CPSC warns against all of the following:
- Never use a gas oven or stovetop to heat a room
- Never bring a charcoal grill, propane grill, or camp stove indoors
- Never run a gasoline or propane generator inside the home, garage, or any enclosed space
- Never use an unvented fuel-burning heater without adequate ventilation and a working CO alarm
Install a battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm in the room where you are sheltering. Test it before winter each year. Replace the alarm every five to seven years per manufacturer guidelines.
Layering and body heat
Clothing is heating you carry.
When supplemental heating is limited, clothing becomes your primary heating system. Layering works because trapped air between layers acts as insulation. Three layers is the standard approach: a base layer against the skin, an insulating layer in the middle, and an outer layer that blocks drafts.
For an older adult who may have difficulty changing clothes frequently, the practical version is simpler: wear your normal clothes, add a fleece or wool sweater, and put a robe or jacket over that. Wear a knit hat indoors. Wear warm socks and slippers with non-slip soles. If your hands get cold, fingerless gloves allow you to still grip a phone, open medication bottles, and use a walker.
At night, a sleeping bag rated for 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit provides far more warmth than multiple blankets. If you do not own a sleeping bag, layer blankets with the heaviest one on top and tuck the edges under the mattress to trap heat. Wear a hat and socks to bed. Most body heat escapes from the head, hands, and feet.
Warm liquids help. A thermos of hot tea, broth, or cocoa prepared while you still have a way to heat water provides warmth from the inside. Avoid alcohol, which feels warming but actually accelerates heat loss by dilating blood vessels.
Warning signs
Hypothermia is subtle.
The NIA warns that older adults may not shiver when cold, removing one of the body's early warning signs. And because hypothermia affects the brain, a person may not recognize the symptoms in themselves.
Signs to watch for
Early signs
- Cold hands and feet
- Puffy or swollen face
- Pale skin
- Shivering (may be absent in older adults)
- Slower than normal movements or speech
Severe signs: call 911
- Confusion or unusual behavior
- Slurred speech
- Drowsiness
- Stiff or clumsy movements
- Weak pulse or very slow heartbeat
If you suspect hypothermia: call 911. Wrap the person in warm blankets. Give warm (not hot) drinks if they are conscious. Do not use direct heat (heating pads, hot water bottles against bare skin) as this can cause dangerous heart rhythm changes.
When to leave
Leave before the house gets too cold.
The same principle applies here as with heat: leave before you feel sick, not after. If your indoor temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit and you cannot warm the room you are in, the safe decision is to go somewhere heated.
Leave-early triggers for cold

1Indoor temperature below 60 degrees Fahrenheit and falling. An indoor thermometer is worth having. Do not rely on how you feel, because the NIA notes that older adults may not sense cold as readily.

2The outage is expected to last overnight or longer during freezing weather. A house without heat in sub-freezing conditions can reach dangerous temperatures within 6 to 12 hours depending on insulation.

4You depend on medical equipment that requires power. Cold and no power is two emergencies, not one. Leave early for the one you can solve.

Before you leave
Protect the house while you are gone.
If you leave during a winter outage, take steps to prevent frozen pipes, which can burst and cause major water damage when the temperature rises:
- Shut off the water supply at the main valve if you know where it is
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warmer room air reach pipes along exterior walls
- Let faucets drip slightly if you cannot shut off the water. Moving water freezes more slowly than standing water
- Unplug electronics and appliances before leaving
- Take your medications, phone, charger, and important documents with you
