Child safety
The most serious battery hazard in your home.
Coin cell batteries are small enough for a child to swallow. If a lithium coin cell lodges in a child's esophagus, the electrical current from the battery creates a chemical reaction that can burn through tissue in as little as two hours. Between 2011 and 2021, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission documented 27 deaths and an estimated 54,300 emergency room visits from ingested or inserted coin and button batteries.
Store out of reach and sight
Keep all coin cell batteries in their original child-resistant packaging, in a location children cannot reach. A kitchen junk drawer is not safe storage. A high shelf or locked cabinet is.
Secure battery compartments
Under Reese's Law, new consumer products must have child-resistant battery compartments. For older devices, check that the battery door is screwed shut or requires two simultaneous actions to open. If it pops open easily, tape it shut or replace the device.
Dispose of spent cells immediately
A dead coin cell can still cause injury if swallowed. Tape both faces of a spent cell before disposal and take it to a household hazardous waste site or a retailer drop-off point. Do not leave spent cells on a counter or in a wastebasket within a child's reach.
If ingestion is suspected
Go to the emergency room immediately. Do not induce vomiting. Do not let the child eat or drink. Call the National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 800-498-8666 for guidance on the way to the hospital. Time matters: the chemical burn begins within minutes.

It does not have Energizer's Color Alert dye technology, which is why it ranks second. Independent testing shows slightly lower capacity than Energizer, measured at 225 to 240 mAh, but well within the range for reliable long-term performance in all standard devices.
Duracell rates a 10-year shelf life for CR2032 cells in sealed packaging, two years shorter than Energizer. For most households that rotate through coin cells within a year or two, this difference is academic. Duracell's availability edge is real: it is the more widely stocked brand in pharmacies and convenience stores, which matters when you need a key fob battery at 9 PM on a Sunday.

Common coin cell sizes

How coin cells fail and what they cost
Coin cells fail by voltage drop. When the 3V output falls below a device's minimum operating voltage, the device stops working. There is typically no gradual dimming or warning; the device simply stops. This is normal behavior for lithium coin cells.
Typical lifespan in common devices: a car key fob lasts 3 to 5 years on a single CR2032. An Apple AirTag lasts about 1 year. A bathroom scale lasts 2 to 3 years. A watch lasts 2 to 5 years depending on complications. A computer CMOS battery lasts 5 to 10 years.
A typical household might use 6 to 10 coin cells per year across all devices. At roughly $1 per cell from a premium brand, the annual cost is under $10. The price difference between premium and budget brands is measured in cents per cell. The child safety features are worth far more than the price difference.
Disposal
Tape both faces of a spent coin cell before disposal to prevent short circuits. The EPA recommends bringing all lithium batteries to a household hazardous waste collection site. Several states require battery recycling by law. Many retailers accept used batteries at in-store collection points. In a household with children, dispose of spent coin cells immediately rather than collecting them in a jar or bag. A spent coin cell can still cause a serious injury if swallowed.

Rechargeable coin cells for hearing aids
If your device uses rechargeable coin-style batteries (common in modern hearing aids), this review does not cover those. Rechargeable coin cells are a different chemistry and are typically specific to the device manufacturer. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for replacements.
Ultra-cheap multi-packs from unknown brands
Bulk packs of 50 or 100 coin cells from no-name sellers on online marketplaces are tempting but risky. Counterfeits are common, capacity is often well below spec, and the child safety features required by Reese's Law may be absent or non-functional.
