The verdict
The GRAYL GeoPress costs more per liter but purifies instead of merely filtering. That distinction matters when the water source is questionable. If you know you will only use it on clean-looking freshwater in North America, the LifeStraw Go saves money. If there is any doubt, the GeoPress covers the full spectrum.

Filter vs purifier
A filter removes bacteria and protozoa by physically blocking them. A purifier also removes viruses and often chemicals. Viruses are too small for hollow fiber membranes. The GeoPress uses electroadsorption, which permanently binds viruses to the media as water passes through. That is a fundamentally different mechanism.
Backcountry use in North America (streams, lakes, springs). Car kits and get-home bags where the expected water source is natural freshwater. Supplementing stored water during a power outage when the tap water has a boil advisory for bacteria. In these scenarios, the LifeStraw Go provides the protection you need at a lower cost per liter.
International travel (hotels, restaurants, street vendors). Flood water or any source with potential sewage contamination. Post-disaster urban water where infrastructure is damaged. Any situation where human waste may have entered the water supply. In these scenarios, virus protection is not optional, and the GeoPress is the right tool.

Best overall — full purification
The GeoPress works like a French press for water. Fill the outer bottle from any freshwater source, insert the inner press, and push down against the ground or any low surface. In about 8 seconds, 24 ounces of water passes through the purifier cartridge and is ready to drink. No batteries, no chemicals, no waiting.
The purifier cartridge uses electroadsorption to permanently bind viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. Multiple layers of ultra-powdered activated carbon then remove chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, PFAS, and microplastics. The result is water that meets EPA purifier standards from virtually any freshwater source on Earth.
The cartridge is rated for 250 liters (65 gallons), or roughly 350 presses. At a replacement cartridge cost of $25 to $30, the per-liter cost is higher than hollow-fiber filters. That is the genuine tradeoff: broader protection costs more per liter. For a household emergency kit, one bottle with two spare cartridges provides roughly 750 liters of purified water.
The GeoPress also includes a one-way drink mix valve that accepts electrolyte powder and sport drink mixes without contaminating the cartridge. The bottle weighs 20 ounces empty. It is noticeably heavier and bulkier than a LifeStraw Go, and that matters if weight is the primary concern.

The membrane filter lasts for 4,000 liters, which is 16 times the cartridge life of the GeoPress. At a bottle cost of $35 to $50, the per-liter cost is dramatically lower. For someone who primarily needs filtered water from North American freshwater sources, the economics favor the LifeStraw Go.
The main limitation is the same as every hollow-fiber filter: no virus removal. The Go Series also does not remove chemicals, heavy metals, or dissolved contaminants. It is a filter bottle, not a purifier bottle. For clean-looking freshwater where bacteria and protozoa are the primary concern, that is sufficient. For anything else, it is not.
