The verdict
Both the LifeStraw and Sawyer are legitimate filters backed by EPA and NSF testing. The real question is not which straw to buy but whether a straw alone is sufficient for your scenario. For most North American freshwater sources, it is. For international travel or flood water, it is not.
Best for emergency kits
The updated Peak Series filter straw weighs 2 ounces, measures about 5 inches long, and filters up to 4,000 liters (1,000 gallons). It uses a 0.2-micron hollow fiber membrane to remove 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999% of parasites, and microplastics. Unlimited shelf life when stored dry. The simplest, lightest backup water option for any kit.

The Sawyer Squeeze is primarily a squeeze-bag filter, but it can be used as a direct-drink straw, attached inline to a hydration bladder, or configured as a gravity filter. More versatile than a dedicated straw, slightly larger at 3 ounces, and rated for 100,000 gallons. The tradeoff is size and simplicity.

What they remove
E. coli, Salmonella, Cholera, and other waterborne bacteria. Both LifeStraw and Sawyer exceed EPA standards for bacteria removal at 99.999999% (log 8). This covers the most common waterborne illness risk in North American freshwater sources.
Giardia and Cryptosporidium, the two most concerning protozoan parasites in North American water. Both filters exceed EPA standards at 99.999% (log 5) removal. This matters: Giardia is present in many backcountry water sources across the US and Canada.
Neither filter removes viruses. Viruses like Hepatitis A, Rotavirus, and Norovirus are smaller than 0.2 microns and pass through hollow fiber membranes. In most North American backcountry scenarios, this is acceptable. For international travel, flood water, or water contaminated by human sewage, pair the straw with chlorine dioxide tablets or use a purifier instead.

Best for emergency kits
The Peak Series is the current generation of the LifeStraw personal filter, replacing the original LifeStraw Personal. It is shorter (about 5 inches vs 9 inches), lighter (2 ounces vs 2 ounces), and has a higher filter capacity (4,000 liters vs 1,000 gallons for the original). The re-engineered hollow fiber membrane reduces clogging compared to earlier models.
The use case is straightforward: place one end in water, drink from the other end. No squeezing, no pumping, no batteries. It works in streams, ponds, lakes, and any freshwater source where you can physically reach the water. It also fits inside a wide-mouth bottle for filtering stored water.
For emergency preparedness, the value of a straw filter is its size and shelf life. It stores indefinitely in a sealed bag, takes up less space than a deck of cards, and provides backup water treatment that requires nothing except access to freshwater. One in the car, one in the get-home bag, one in the emergency kit.

The Sawyer Squeeze is the Swiss Army knife of portable water filters. It can be used as a direct-drink straw, as a squeeze-bag filter, as a gravity filter (hang the bag, let it drip), or inline with a hydration bladder. This versatility is the reason it appears on nearly every serious outdoor and preparedness equipment list.
The filter uses a 0.1-micron absolute hollow fiber membrane, slightly finer than the LifeStraw's 0.2-micron rating. Both exceed EPA standards for bacteria and protozoa. The Sawyer's rated lifespan is 100,000 gallons, functionally a lifetime filter. It is backflushable with the included syringe, which extends field life significantly.
The tradeoff compared to a dedicated straw: the Sawyer Squeeze is larger (3 oz vs 2 oz), comes with squeeze pouches that add bulk, and costs more. If all you need is the lightest possible backup in a glove box or get-home bag, the LifeStraw Peak is simpler. If you want one filter that covers multiple use modes, the Sawyer is the better long-term investment.

Where each belongs
The LifeStraw Peak Series Personal. It is the smallest, lightest option and stores indefinitely in a sealed bag. Drop one in the glove box, one in the office drawer, one in the get-home bag. Forget about it until you need it.
Either works. If the kit already has a Sawyer Squeeze (common in recommended kit lists), you do not need a separate straw. If you want dedicated straw simplicity for the kit, the LifeStraw Peak is purpose-built.
The Sawyer Squeeze. It doubles as a gravity filter for household use, works inline with hydration bladders, and the 100,000-gallon lifespan means it will outlast any emergency. The squeeze pouches are the weak point; replace them with Evernew or CNOC bags.
