IBC Tote Water Storage. 1,000 gallons in a single cage.

The cheapest per-gallon water storage option for rural properties. But buying used requires knowing exactly what the tote previously held. Get it wrong and you have 275 gallons of contaminated plastic.

What is an IBC tote

An industrial container repurposed for water storage.

An Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) tote is a reusable industrial container consisting of an HDPE plastic bottle inside a galvanized steel cage mounted on a pallet base. Standard sizes are 275 gallons and 330 gallons. They are designed for transporting liquids in commercial supply chains. The food-grade versions make excellent bulk water storage for rural properties when sourced correctly.

275-Gallon Standard Tote

The most common size. Dimensions: approximately 48 x 40 x 46 inches (fits a standard pallet). Weight full: approximately 2,400 lbs. Weight empty: approximately 130 lbs. The 2-inch ball valve at the bottom provides gravity drainage. The 6-inch fill cap at the top allows hose filling.

330-Gallon Tote

Same footprint as the 275-gallon, but taller. Dimensions: approximately 48 x 40 x 53 inches. Weight full: approximately 2,870 lbs. Less common and sometimes harder to source used. The extra 55 gallons adds 460 lbs of weight and 7 inches of height.

Totes are sold by farm supply stores, Craigslist sellers, Facebook Marketplace, and industrial surplus dealers. The sourcing verification matters more than the brand.

Four things to verify before handing over cash.

Previous contents

This is the most important check. Every IBC tote has a placard or label showing what it previously contained. Acceptable previous contents for drinking water storage: water, food-grade glycol, fruit juice, vinegar, food-grade vegetable oils. Unacceptable: detergents, industrial chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, motor oils, or anything with a hazard label. If the seller cannot tell you what it held, walk away.

Cage condition

Inspect the steel cage for rust, bent bars, and weld failures. The cage bears the structural load when the tote is moved by forklift. A compromised cage can fail during transport, dropping 2,400 lbs of water. Surface rust is cosmetic. Structural rust at weld joints or pallet attachment points is a pass.

Bottle condition

Check the HDPE bottle for cracks, UV yellowing, and wall thinness. Press on the sides; healthy HDPE flexes and springs back. Brittle, yellowed plastic has been UV-degraded and may crack under the pressure of 2,400 lbs of water. Check the bottom seam where the bottle meets the pallet; this is the most common failure point.

Valve and cap integrity

The 2-inch ball valve at the bottom must open and close smoothly. A stuck or dripping valve means a slow leak of 2,400 lbs of water in your yard. The 6-inch fill cap must seal cleanly. Replacement valves and caps are available but add $15 to $30 to the purchase. Factor this in.

New vs used

The cost difference is real. So is the risk.

New food-grade IBC tote

No previous-contents risk. Clean HDPE bottle. Full cage integrity. Costs $300 to $500 for a 275-gallon tote. The premium is the certainty that nothing has contaminated the plastic. For drinking water storage, this is the safer choice.

Used food-grade IBC tote

Costs $50 to $150 locally. The cost savings are substantial, but the verification burden is entirely on you. A used tote that previously held food-grade juice or water is fine. A used tote that previously held industrial cleaner is not, regardless of how well it was rinsed. HDPE absorbs trace compounds that cleaning does not remove.

For non-potable use (garden irrigation, livestock watering, fire suppression reserve), used totes with a broader previous-contents history are acceptable. For drinking water, the previous-contents verification is non-negotiable.

UV protection

IBC bottles are translucent. That is a problem for long-term storage.

The standard IBC bottle is natural (translucent white) HDPE. This allows sunlight to penetrate, which promotes algae growth and accelerates UV degradation of the plastic. For long-term outdoor water storage, you need to block the light. Three common approaches: paint the bottle with UV-resistant exterior paint, wrap it in a reflective tarp, or position it inside a shed or under a permanent shade structure.
