What it is

The Westinghouse WGen20000c is a large, conventional open-frame generator built around a 999cc V-twin engine with a cast iron cylinder sleeve. It runs on gasoline only, no dual-fuel option, and delivers 20,000 running watts with a 28,000-watt starting surge, more than double the running wattage of every other generator reviewed on this site. The 17.17-gallon fuel tank supports roughly 11 hours of runtime at half load, and push-button electric start is backed by a wireless remote key fob.

The control panel includes four 120V GFCI household outlets, two 50-amp 120/240V outlets, two 30-amp 120/240V outlets, and one 30-amp 120V outlet, all under rubber covers. Copper windings keep total harmonic distortion under 5%, which Westinghouse markets as electronics-safe power, though this is a conventional generator, not a true inverter. A digital readout displays voltage, frequency, and lifetime run hours. At 541 pounds, it moves on a wheel kit and folding handles, with a lift hook on the frame for loading with equipment rather than by hand.

Why it works

This generator exists for a specific job the rest of this lineup does not cover:

Enough wattage to stop rationing power

At 20,000 running watts, this generator can carry a central air conditioner, a well pump, a sump pump, a refrigerator, and household lighting simultaneously, the kind of load a smaller generator forces you to choose between. For large homes or households that cannot tolerate cycling appliances on and off during an outage, this is the difference between backup power and normal life.

Two 50-amp outlets, not one

Most generators reviewed on this site include a single 50-amp outlet alongside a 30-amp one. This unit includes two 50-amp outlets plus two 30-amp outlets, giving it the capacity to run a transfer switch and a second heavy load, such as an RV or a job site tool, at the same time.

Built to run for the long haul

A 17.17-gallon tank and roughly 11 hours of runtime at half load mean fewer refueling trips during a multi-day outage, which matters more as wattage and fuel consumption both climb. The cast iron cylinder sleeve is a durability choice aimed at sustained, heavy-load running rather than occasional weekend use.

The one thing to know

Carbon monoxide safety is non-negotiable

Portable generators produce carbon monoxide, an odorless gas that can reach lethal concentrations indoors within minutes. The CPSC recommends placing any portable generator at least 20 feet from all doors, windows, and vents, with the exhaust pointed away from the home. Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, on a covered porch, in a carport, or in any enclosed or partially enclosed space, even with doors or windows open. Westinghouse's CO sensor shuts the unit down automatically if dangerous levels are detected near it, but this is a backup layer, not a substitute for correct placement. Install battery-operated CO detectors on every level of your home.

Not sold in California, and not something one person moves alone

The WGen20000c is not CARB compliant and is not sold for use in California under current state emissions rules. Separately, at 541 pounds, "portable" is technically accurate but misleading. This unit moves on its wheel kit once it is on the ground, and lifts with equipment, not by hand. Plan for a truck, a ramp, or a trailer to get it to your home in the first place, and a permanent, level spot to store and run it.

The other thing worth knowing is noise. At 74 dBA, this is a loud, conventional open-frame generator, closer to a running lawn mower than the quieter inverter units reviewed elsewhere on this site. It is also gasoline only, with no propane or dual-fuel option, so fuel storage planning matters more here than on the dual-fuel units in this lineup.

Alternatives worth knowing

DuroMax XP11000iH, for a lighter, quieter, dual-fuel option

Less than half the running wattage (9,000W) but a true inverter with cleaner power, dual fuel flexibility, and a fraction of the weight at 216 pounds. The right choice for most households that do not need to run a central AC and a well pump at the same time. Read our review.

Pulsar PGDA70BiSCO, for CARB compliance

A third of the running wattage (6,000W) but CARB compliant, dual fuel, and a true inverter at 118 pounds. The right choice for California households or anyone who wants clean power without the weight and noise of a whole-home unit. Read our review.

Generac GP9500E Tri-Fuel, for a fuel option this unit lacks

Less than half the running wattage (9,500W) but adds natural gas as a third fuel source, useful for a home already piped for gas. The right choice if fuel flexibility matters more than maximum wattage. Read our review.

Maintenance

Run the generator under load for 15 to 30 minutes every 30 days to keep the engine and fuel system in working order. Since this unit is gasoline only, use fuel stabilizer for any storage period longer than 30 days to prevent the carburetor from gumming up with stale fuel.

Check the oil level before every use; the automatic low-oil shutdown helps prevent engine damage if it runs low. Follow the manual's schedule for oil changes, typically an earlier first change followed by longer intervals once the engine is broken in. Given the size of this engine, budget more time for routine service than a small inverter generator requires.

Westinghouse backs the WGen20000c with a 3-year limited warranty for residential use and lifetime technical support. Register the unit and keep the purchase receipt with your household documents.

NWS recommendation

If your household needs to run a central air conditioner, a well pump, and the rest of the home at the same time during an extended outage, and you have a permanent place to store and run 541 pounds of generator, the WGen20000c delivers more usable wattage than anything else reviewed on this site. It is not the right choice for households that just need the essentials covered, and it is not currently sold for use in California. Pair it with a transfer switch, plan fuel storage carefully since it runs on gasoline only, and place it at least 20 feet from the house with the exhaust pointed away.
