Rechargeable batteries: the same cells, used hundreds of times.
For the devices in your home that eat batteries, a set of rechargeables and a good charger cost less over time, create far less waste, and mean you never run out mid-use. Here is how to choose them, charge them safely, and know when a disposable is still the smarter pick.
WHERE THIS RUNG FITS
Reusable cells, for the devices that earn them.
Rechargeable batteries sit on the second rung of the battery capability ladder. They are the same familiar sizes as the disposable cells on the rung below, reused instead of thrown away. They shine in the devices you feed batteries to often. They are the wrong choice for the ones you almost never touch.
Reach for rechargeables when
- A device drains cells quickly, like a game controller or a camera flash
- You replace the batteries often enough to notice the cost
- You want a rotating supply that refills at home
- The device already uses a rechargeable pack, like a phone, laptop, or power tool
Stay with disposables when
- The device is safety gear you rarely touch, like a smoke alarm
- It sits unused for months, since rechargeables self-discharge
- You need a decade of shelf life ready to go
- It lives in the cold, where single-use lithium cells hold up best

THE REUSABLE CHEMISTRIES
Five families, two you will actually buy.
Most households only need two of these: low-self-discharge NiMH for everyday AA and AAA devices, and whatever lithium-ion pack came inside their phones, laptops, and tools. The rest are worth recognizing so you know what you are looking at.

A rechargeable alkaline also exists, but it is a niche product with limited cycles and its own required charger, and it is not the same as the single-use alkaline cells sold in stores. For most people it is not worth the trouble over NiMH.
SHAPES AND SIZES
From AA cells to tool packs.
Rechargeables come in two broad forms: loose cells you swap in and out yourself, and sealed packs built into a device or its ecosystem. Knowing which you are dealing with tells you how to charge and replace it.
AA and AAA cells
Almost always NiMH. The workhorse rechargeable for remotes, controllers, headlamps, toys, and small electronics.
18650 and 21700 cells
Cylindrical lithium-ion cells, larger than a AA, used in laptops, power tools, and quality flashlights. Handle with the lithium cautions below.
Device packs
The sealed lithium packs inside phones, cameras, and laptops. Replace with the maker's part, not a bargain look-alike.
Power-tool platforms
Each brand's tool batteries fit only that brand's tools and charger. Standardizing on one platform is cheaper than owning three.
Lawn and garden packs
The same platform idea scaled up. Larger lithium packs power mowers, trimmers, and blowers within one brand's system.
Camera and specialty packs
Shaped lithium packs specific to one camera or device. Keep a charged spare if the device matters to you.
THE CHARGER MATTERS AS MUCH AS THE CELL
A good charger is half the system.
A cheap charger shortens the life of good cells and, matched to the wrong chemistry, becomes a hazard. Spend as much thought on the charger as on the batteries.
Smart beats dumb
A smart charger senses when each cell is full and stops, which prevents the overcharging that ages and stresses batteries. A basic timed charger keeps pushing current and can cook a cell. Pay for the smart one.
Independent channels
Better chargers treat each slot separately, so you can charge one cell or four, of different states, at once. Cheaper ones charge in pairs, which forces mismatched cells to fill unevenly.
Charge rate and conditioning
A gentler, slower charge is easier on cells than the fastest setting. Some NiMH chargers add a refresh or conditioning cycle that revives tired cells and reports their true capacity.
Wall, car, and solar
Many smart chargers run from USB, which means a wall adapter, a car socket, a power bank, or a solar panel can all refill your household cells during an outage.
COMPATIBILITY: FIT IS NOT THE SAME AS MATCH
A cell can drop into a slot and still be the wrong battery for it. Three things decide real compatibility: the chemistry a charger is built for, the protection circuit some lithium cells carry and others do not, and the terminal shape, since button-top and flat-top cells do not seat the same in every device.
The rule that keeps you safe: match the charger to the chemistry printed on the cell. A NiMH charger is not a lithium charger. When a device came with a rechargeable pack, replace it with the maker's part rather than a cheaper cell that merely fits the space.
CHARGING SAFELY
Most trouble starts at the charger.
Charging is the moment a battery is most likely to cause a problem, and nearly all of it is preventable. The guidance here follows the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the makers' own labels.
Never recharge a single-use cell
Alkaline and lithium primary cells are marked do not recharge by their makers. Their chemistry is not built to reverse, so charging one can make it overheat, leak corrosive paste, or vent gas. Only charge cells labeled rechargeable, in a charger made for that chemistry. Charging carries recognized risks of overheating and electrolyte exposure even with the right cells, so this is not a rule to bend.[1]
Loose lithium cells short easily
The CPSC warns consumers not to buy loose, rewrapped 18650 lithium cells, whose bare terminals can short against keys or coins and enter thermal runaway, expelling burning contents. Use protected cells from a reputable maker, keep them in a case, and never carry them loose with metal.[2]
Use a quality charger
The CPSC has linked cheap, uncertified chargers to fires and at least one death. Buy a charger from a reputable maker and match it to your cells.[3]
Charge where you can see it
Charge on a hard, nonflammable surface, not on a bed or under a pillow. Stay in the home while charging and unplug the charger when the cells are full.
Stop if it swells or heats
A cell that puffs, grows hot rather than warm, smells sharp, or leaks is finished. Stop charging, move it to a nonflammable surface away from anything that burns, and retire it.[1]
Do not mix cells
Keep matched sets together. Mixing old and new cells, or different brands and capacities, in one device makes them charge and drain unevenly and can lead to leakage.
Mind heat and cold
Heat shortens the life of every rechargeable, so keep them out of hot cars. Charging a lithium cell below freezing can permanently damage it.
Recycle, never trash
All rechargeables must be recycled, never put in household trash. Lithium cells can start fires in the waste stream, and old nickel-cadmium contains toxic cadmium. Tape terminals or bag each one.[4]
DOES IT PAY OFF
The break-even is measured in cycles.
A rechargeable cell costs several times what a single-use cell costs up front, and you buy a charger once. But a good NiMH cell survives hundreds of charge cycles. After only a handful of uses it has already cost less per use than buying disposables, and it keeps going for hundreds more. On a high-drain device the savings, and the waste kept out of the trash, are real.
High-drain devices win big
Controllers, camera flashes, and toys that burn through disposables pay back a rechargeable set fastest.
Buy the charger once
The charger is a one-time cost spread across every cell and every cycle for years. A good one is worth it.
When disposables still win
For a device used a few times a year, a disposable you buy once a decade beats a rechargeable that self-discharges between uses.
KEEPING A SET ORGANIZED
A little order makes a set last.
Rechargeables reward a small amount of organization. These habits keep a set balanced, findable, and ready.
Label and keep matched sets
Mark cells with the month you bought them and keep the ones you bought together as a set. A device runs best on cells of the same age and capacity.
Track cycles and test capacity
A smart charger reports each cell's real capacity. Watch for the one that fills fast and drains faster, and retire it before it drags a set down.
Rotate and store charged
Use older cells first. Keep a charged set ready, and top up low-self-discharge cells every few months so a full set is always on hand.
Store spare chargers and cables
A charger with no cable, or a dead charger, strands a whole set. Keep a spare USB cable and adapter with the charger so it works from wall, car, or power bank in an outage.
