Operating cost, breakdowns and the ownership record
What the vehicle costs, what to do when it stops, and how to track it all so the next decision is made with data instead of panic.
Household numbers
Calculate what the vehicle actually costs
The most useful vehicle-cost number is the one calculated from your own driving, not a national average. For a gasoline or diesel vehicle, divide your fuel spending by the miles you drove during the same period. For an EV, divide your total charging cost by miles driven. These give you your actual energy cost per mile.
The household cost-per-mile calculation
Gasoline or diesel: Fuel dollars spent / miles driven = fuel cost per mile
Electric: Charging dollars spent / miles driven = charging cost per mile
Example: $180 in fuel / 1,200 miles = $0.15 per mile in energy cost
Energy is only one category. Total household vehicle cost can include the loan or lease payment, insurance, registration and taxes, fuel or electricity, scheduled maintenance, tires, unplanned repairs, parking and tolls, and roadside-service coverage. Not all of these hit in the same month, but they all hit the same budget. Tracking them in the vehicle record turns transportation from a vague expense into a known number.
EPA labels are comparison tools, not guarantees
EPA fuel-economy labels use standardized testing designed to reflect a range of real-world conditions. Actual mileage varies by driving behavior, weather, road conditions, vehicle condition, and other factors. Use the labels to compare two vehicles against each other on even terms. Use your own fuel or charging records to measure what transportation actually costs your household.
Electric vehicle fit
EV ownership starts with daily use
The Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center recommends considering daily mileage, longer trip needs, home charging access, workplace or public charging availability, and connector compatibility when evaluating whether an EV fits a household. An EV that covers daily commuting and errands easily on a nightly charge may be an excellent fit. An EV that requires frequent public charging stops and does not have reliable access to compatible stations nearby is a different proposition.
Home charging
DOE notes that many EV owners charge at home. Level 1 charging using a standard household outlet may meet some drivers' needs, particularly for shorter daily mileage. Level 2 charging may be useful for longer daily driving, larger batteries, and shorter charging windows. Level 2 installation is an electrical project: DOE advises that electrical capacity must be evaluated, equipment should meet applicable safety requirements, local and state codes apply, permits may be required, and qualified electrical installation may be needed. Treat Level 2 as a code-sensitive electrical installation, not as plugging in an appliance.
Public charging
For EV ownership, record your vehicle's compatible connector types, your home charger details, any workplace charger access, nearby public charging locations, typical long-trip charging options, and the pricing model for public chargers you use regularly. Charging infrastructure and connector adoption continue to change. Do not treat any current station count or connector standard as permanently settled.
EV fit is practical, not ideological
An EV may be an excellent, adequate, or poor match for a specific household's daily mileage, charging access, travel patterns, and electrical situation. The evaluation is the same kind of requirement-matching used for any vehicle decision. Let the household's actual needs determine the answer rather than starting with a conclusion and working backward.
Ordinary breakdowns
Prepare for the day the vehicle stops
Vehicles break down. The question is not whether but when, and whether the household is prepared to handle it as an inconvenience rather than a crisis. Preparation has two parts: carrying basic equipment and knowing how to get help.
The ordinary roadside kit
NHTSA's seasonal driving guidance recommends an emergency roadside kit. A sensible baseline includes a phone and charging cable, a flashlight with fresh batteries, warning devices such as reflective triangles or flares, a basic first-aid kit, a tire-pressure gauge, jumper cables or a portable jump starter, gloves, basic tools, and drinking water. Tailor the kit to your vehicle, season, geography, and driving conditions. A winter kit in a northern climate needs different additions than a summer kit in the desert.

Know your roadside-assistance route
Roadside assistance may come from automobile insurance, the vehicle manufacturer's warranty, a motor club membership, a credit-card benefit, or a standalone towing service. Record the provider name, phone number or app, membership or policy number, and any towing-distance limit. Do not assume roadside assistance is included with insurance or the vehicle unless you have verified it.
Location safety overrides mechanical ability
A driver who knows how to change a tire may still be in a location where doing so is unsafe: narrow shoulder, high-speed traffic, poor visibility, soft ground, bad weather, or limited personal mobility. The safest repair may be calling for help. Carrying tools does not create an obligation to use them in every situation. The roadside kit supports basic tasks and access to help. It does not turn the driver into a roadside mechanic.
Winter stalls
NHTSA advises drivers stalled in severe winter conditions to remain focused on occupant safety, make the vehicle visible, manage carbon monoxide risk by keeping the exhaust clear if the engine is used, and avoid prolonged engine running in an enclosed area. Detailed winter preparedness and disaster-level stranding belong in the winter driving section. This chapter covers the ordinary breakdown: the flat tire, the dead battery, the overheating engine on a Tuesday afternoon.
Track and decide
The ownership record and the replacement decision
A vehicle ownership record tracks what has been done, what it cost, what is coming next, and whether the vehicle is still serving the household well. Without it, every repair decision is made from memory and emotion. With it, patterns emerge: a vehicle that averages $200 per month in unplanned repairs over the past year is telling you something different from one that needed a single $800 repair after 60,000 trouble-free miles.

The repair-or-replace decision
A rule like "replace the car if the repair exceeds 50 percent of its value" is not a federal standard. It is a rough heuristic that ignores too many variables to be universally useful. A $3,000 transmission repair on a vehicle worth $6,000 might be smart if the rest of the vehicle is solid and a replacement would cost $15,000 plus higher insurance. The same repair on a vehicle with failing brakes, an aging engine, and mounting electrical problems might be money thrown after a vehicle that is done.
Consider the vehicle's overall condition, the nature of the repair (is it a one-time fix or a symptom of broader decline?), whether the issue is safety-related, the expected remaining useful life after repair, the realistic cost of a replacement including financing and insurance changes, the household's current financial position, reliability requirements, and available alternatives. The ownership record provides the data this decision needs.
The annual transportation review
At least periodically, step back and ask the bigger questions. Does the household still need this vehicle? Is it reliable? Is it safe? Is it maintained? What major maintenance is approaching? What is transportation costing? Are transportation needs changing? Would a different mix of vehicle, transit, and other options serve the household better? The review does not have to be formal. It has to happen. Vehicles age, households change, and the transportation system that made sense three years ago may not make sense today.
