Household Chemical Safety

The bleach under the kitchen sink and the ammonia-based glass cleaner in the bathroom are both safe on their own. Mixed together, they produce a gas that can send you to the hospital. Most chemical hazards in a home are not exotic. They are ordinary products stored badly or combined by accident.

Cleaning substances are consistently among the top causes of poison center calls in the United States. In 2024, children and teens accounted for nearly 55 percent of all human poison exposures reported to U.S. poison centers, and household cleaning products ranked among the most common substances involved in pediatric cases.[1]

The typical American home contains bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, drain openers, oven cleaners, rust removers, toilet bowl cleaners, gasoline, paint thinners, and pesticides. Each product is engineered to be safe when used alone, as directed, with ventilation. Problems arise when products are mixed, when they are stored in the wrong container, when ventilation is inadequate, or when a child reaches a cabinet that should have been locked.

This page covers the combinations that produce dangerous reactions, the storage practices that prevent accidental exposure, and the ventilation habits that keep fumes from accumulating. None of this requires special equipment. It requires knowing what is under your sink and treating it accordingly.

The critical rule

What never to mix

The simplest rule in household chemical safety: never mix cleaning products. Even products that seem like they should work well together can produce toxic gases. The combinations below are the most common and the most dangerous.

Bleach + Ammonia

Produces chloramine gas

This is the most common dangerous household chemical combination. Chloramine gas causes coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and watery eyes. In enclosed spaces, it can cause pneumonia and fluid in the lungs. In 2021, U.S. poison centers recorded over 3,400 chloramine gas exposures, nearly all unintentional.[2] Ammonia is present in many glass cleaners, bathroom cleaners, and multipurpose cleaners. It is also present in urine, which means cleaning a litter box, diaper pail, or toilet bowl with bleach can produce chloramine gas.[3]

Bleach + Acid

Produces chlorine gas

Mixing bleach with acidic products (vinegar, some toilet bowl cleaners, lime or calcium removers, some dishwasher detergents) releases chlorine gas. Chlorine gas causes burning in the eyes, nose, and throat. In high concentrations it damages the airways and can be fatal. This combination is particularly common when people use bleach to clean a toilet that still contains acidic toilet bowl cleaner.[4]

Bleach + Rubbing Alcohol

Produces chloroform and other toxic compounds

This combination produces chloroform, which is toxic to inhale and can cause dizziness, nausea, and unconsciousness. It also produces hydrochloric acid and other chlorinated compounds. There is no household cleaning scenario where this combination is useful or safe.

Hydrogen Peroxide + Vinegar

Produces peracetic acid

Both are common household cleaners, and both are mild on their own. Mixed together they form peracetic acid, which is corrosive to skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract. Using one after the other on the same surface (without rinsing between) can produce the same reaction.

If you accidentally mix chemicals

Move to fresh air immediately. If you are having difficulty breathing, call 911. If you can breathe but were exposed to fumes, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (available 24/7 in the United States).[1]

Do not attempt to clean up the mixture until you have ventilated the area thoroughly (open windows, turn on fans, leave the room). When you return to clean, wear gloves and avoid breathing the residue. If someone is unconscious near a chemical mixture, do not enter the area without fresh air; call 911 and tell them there is a chemical exposure.

Prevention

Storage that prevents problems

Keep products in original containers

Never transfer household chemicals to unlabeled bottles, food containers, cups, or any container that could be mistaken for something drinkable. This is the leading cause of accidental ingestion by children and confused adults. The original container has the product name, ingredients, safety warnings, and the Poison Control number. A repurposed water bottle full of drain cleaner has none of these.

Separate incompatible products

Store bleach-based products and ammonia-based products on separate shelves or in separate cabinets. Do the same with acids (vinegar, toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers). The goal is to ensure that if a bottle leaks or tips over, the spill cannot contact an incompatible product. A shelf of cleaning supplies is not dangerous. A shelf where a tipped bottle of bleach drips onto an open bottle of ammonia-based cleaner is.

Child access

If there are children in or visiting the household, store all cleaning products, medications, and chemicals in cabinets with child-safety latches or locks. Under the kitchen sink and under the bathroom sink are the two most common locations for accidental pediatric exposure. A $5 cabinet latch eliminates the risk. Cleaning substances consistently rank among the top substances involved in pediatric poison exposures in the United States.[1]

Flammable products

Paint thinner, mineral spirits, gasoline, and aerosol cans are flammable and should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, pilot lights, water heaters, and direct sunlight. The garage is acceptable if it is ventilated. The utility closet next to the furnace is not. Aerosol cans can explode if overheated. Our generator safety guide covers gasoline storage in detail.

Airflow

Ventilation matters

Many household chemicals produce fumes that are irritating or harmful in enclosed spaces but harmless with adequate airflow. Bleach, oven cleaner, spray paint, adhesives, and strong floor cleaners all fall into this category. The label will say "use in a well-ventilated area," and that instruction is there for a reason.

Well-ventilated means air is moving through the space and exiting the building. An open window on one side of a room is a start. An open window plus a fan pulling air toward the window is better. A bathroom with the door closed and no exhaust fan running is not ventilated, regardless of how small the room is. A bathroom with the exhaust fan running and the door cracked is.

Pay particular attention to bathrooms (small, often poorly ventilated, and where the strongest cleaners get used), basements (below-grade, still air), and laundry rooms (bleach fumes plus enclosed space). If you feel lightheaded, your eyes burn, or you develop a headache while cleaning, stop. Leave the room. Open windows and let it air out before returning.

During a power outage or a winter storm, ventilation changes. Windows may be closed, exhaust fans may not work, and the temptation to "just deal with it" in a stuffy room is higher. Adjust your cleaning accordingly. This is not the time for heavy-duty products in enclosed spaces.

Reading the label

What the label tells you

Federal law requires household chemical products to carry signal words that indicate their hazard level. These words have specific, regulated meanings and appear prominently on the label:

DANGER

The highest hazard level. The product can cause serious injury or death from a single exposure. Drain openers, oven cleaners, and some concentrated pesticides carry this word. Treat any product labeled DANGER with maximum respect: gloves, ventilation, and no mixing.

WARNING

Moderately hazardous. The product can cause illness or injury with improper use. Many general-purpose cleaners and laundry products carry this word.

CAUTION

The lowest required hazard level. The product is mildly hazardous and unlikely to cause serious injury with normal use, but can still cause irritation, especially to eyes and skin.

Every label also includes first-aid instructions specific to the product. Read them before you need them. If a product says "call Poison Control immediately if swallowed," that instruction exists because swallowing happens. The national Poison Control number is 1-800-222-1222. It is staffed 24/7. Consider posting it on the refrigerator or inside the cabinet where chemicals are stored.

Common mistakes

Mistake

Using bleach in the toilet after a bowl cleaner

Many toilet bowl cleaners are acidic. Adding bleach to a toilet that still contains acidic residue produces chlorine gas in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space. If you want to use bleach in the toilet, flush thoroughly first to remove any previous cleaner, and keep the bathroom ventilated.

Mistake

Transferring chemicals to food or drink containers

A child sees a water bottle and drinks from it. An older adult sees a cup and takes a sip. Transferring chemicals out of their original labeled containers is one of the most common causes of accidental poisoning. There is no shortcut worth that risk. Keep the original container.

Mistake

"More product means cleaner"

Using more than the recommended amount of a cleaning product does not clean better. It increases fume concentration, leaves more residue, and raises the risk of skin and respiratory irritation. Follow the dilution ratios on the label. They are not conservative estimates; they are the amounts the product was designed and tested for.

Mistake

Cleaning the litter box with bleach

Cat urine contains ammonia. Bleach plus ammonia equals chloramine gas. If you clean a litter box with bleach, rinse it thoroughly with plain water first to remove all urine residue before applying bleach. Better yet, clean it with hot water and unscented dish soap, which does the job without the chemical risk.[3]

Mistake

No child locks on under-sink cabinets

The cabinet under the kitchen sink is the single most accessible source of household chemicals for a toddler. A $5 child-safety latch takes two minutes to install and eliminates the most common pediatric exposure scenario. If there are children in or visiting the home, this is worth doing today.
