Six tasks that save money, build confidence, and keep your vehicle running well between service appointments.

Wiper blades, exterior bulbs, air filters, fuses, and fluid checks. No lifting, no crawling underneath, no special tools. Every task on this page can be done in a driveway with the engine off.

Why do these yourself

Because they are simple.

These are the tasks a service shop charges you labor for that you can do in minutes with no experience. A wiper blade replacement takes three minutes and saves $20 to $40 in labor. A cabin air filter swap takes five minutes and saves $30 to $50. A headlight bulb replacement takes ten minutes and saves a trip to the shop plus a $50 to $100 labor charge.

More importantly, doing these tasks yourself teaches you how your vehicle goes together. You learn where the fuse boxes are, what the engine compartment looks like when everything is normal, how the air filter housing opens, and what the fluid reservoirs look like at proper levels. This familiarity makes you a better diagnostician when something does go wrong, because you know what the baseline looks like.

None of these tasks require the vehicle to be raised. None involve safety-critical systems. None use power tools. All of them use parts available at any auto parts store, and the store staff will look up the exact part for your vehicle by year, make, and model.

The six tasks

Tools you will need for all six tasks.

Safety glasses, nitrile gloves, a flashlight, paper towels or a clean rag, and the owner's manual. Some bulb replacements may require a Phillips screwdriver or a 10mm socket. The fuse puller is usually included in the fuse box. That is the complete tool list for this entire page.

Task 1

Wiper blades.

Wiper blades are the simplest replacement on the vehicle. No tools, no fasteners, no electrical connections. The old blade unclips from the wiper arm; the new blade clips on. The entire process takes less than three minutes per blade.

When to replace

Replace wiper blades every 6 to 12 months, or when you notice any of these signs: streaking (lines of water left behind), skipping (the blade bounces across the glass instead of wiping smoothly), chattering (a vibrating or shuddering motion with noise), or sections of the windshield left unwiped. Sun, heat, cold, and ozone degrade the rubber edge regardless of use. A blade that was fine last fall may be useless by spring.

Check before the rainy season, not during it. Spray washer fluid and run the wipers on a dry day. If the result is not a clean, streak-free windshield, replace the blades.

How to buy the right ones

Use the fit guide at any auto parts store (physical or online). Enter your year, make, and model. The guide returns the correct blade length for the driver side, passenger side, and rear (if equipped). The driver-side blade is usually longer than the passenger side. Do not guess the size.

Wiper blades come in three common types: conventional (a metal frame with a replaceable rubber element), beam (a frameless curved design that conforms to the windshield), and hybrid (a combination). Beam blades generally perform better and last longer than conventional blades, though they cost more. Either type works. Use whichever the fit guide recommends for your vehicle or choose based on your budget.

How to replace them

Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the upright position. On some vehicles, you may need to activate a "service position" first by turning the ignition to accessory mode and cycling the wiper switch. Check the owner's manual if the wipers park under the hood edge and cannot be lifted.

Find the release tab or button where the blade connects to the arm. This varies by brand and attachment type, but most use a simple pinch tab, a push button, or a slide lock. The new blade's packaging includes a diagram or instructions for the most common attachment types.

Press or slide the release and pull the old blade off the arm. Before setting the arm down, fold a towel over the windshield under the arm. If the arm swings down without a blade attached, the metal end can crack the glass.

Attach the new blade using the same connection point. You will hear or feel a click when it locks in place. Tug gently to confirm it is secured.

Lower the arm gently back to the windshield. Repeat for the other side. Test by spraying washer fluid and running the wipers. The windshield should clear completely and silently in a single pass.

Common mistakes

Letting the bare arm hit the glass. The metal arm without a blade will crack or chip the windshield. Always fold a towel under the arm when the blade is removed.

Buying the wrong size. A blade that is too long contacts the windshield frame or the other blade. Too short leaves unwiped areas. Use the fit guide every time.

Forgetting the rear wiper. SUVs, crossovers, minivans, hatchbacks, and wagons have a rear wiper that wears out just like the front blades. Replace it on the same schedule.

Using the wipers on a dry or icy windshield. Running wipers on a dry windshield accelerates rubber wear. Scraping wipers across ice can tear the blade edge. Clear ice with a scraper first, then use washer fluid with the wipers.

Task 2

Exterior bulbs.

A burned-out headlight, taillight, or turn signal is a safety issue and a traffic citation in most jurisdictions. Replacing a standard bulb is straightforward on most vehicles, though access varies from easy (open the trunk, twist, pull) to moderately involved (remove an air intake duct to reach the headlight housing).

The general procedure

Every vehicle is different, and the owner's manual is the authoritative source for how to access each bulb. The general process for most vehicles follows this pattern:

Identify the burned-out bulb. Turn on the headlights, taillights, turn signals, and brake lights (have someone press the pedal or use a wall reflection). Note which bulb is out and on which side.

Look up the bulb number. The owner's manual lists the correct bulb for each position. Write it down. Auto parts stores also have fitment guides online and in-store.

Access the bulb. For taillights and turn signals, access is usually from inside the trunk or behind an access panel. For headlights, access is from the engine compartment, behind the headlight housing. The owner's manual shows the specific access method.

Remove the old bulb. Most automotive bulbs use a twist-lock socket: turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it out of the housing. The bulb then pulls straight out of the socket (or twists out, depending on the type).

Install the new bulb. Insert the new bulb into the socket (it fits only one way). Push the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks. Test the light before reassembling any panels.

Halogen, LED, and HID

Halogen bulbs are the most common and the easiest to replace. They are inexpensive and available everywhere. Do not touch the glass with bare fingers. Oils from skin create a hot spot that shortens bulb life. Handle by the base or wear a clean nitrile glove.

LED bulbs are increasingly common in newer vehicles, especially for taillights, turn signals, and daytime running lights. Individual LEDs rarely burn out. If an LED cluster fails, the entire assembly is usually replaced as a unit, which is more expensive and may not be a straightforward owner task.

HID (xenon) headlights use a high-voltage ballast to ignite xenon gas. Replacing HID bulbs involves working near high-voltage components. If your vehicle has HID headlights, consider having a shop handle the replacement, or at minimum, disconnect the battery and wait several minutes before touching the ballast or bulb connector.

Replace in pairs.

When one headlight burns out, the other is usually close behind because both bulbs have the same age and usage. Replacing both at the same time ensures even light output and avoids a return trip to the parts store in a few weeks. This applies to headlights more than taillights, since headlights run more hours and degrade from heat.

When access is too difficult

Some vehicles require removing bumper panels, battery boxes, air intake components, or entire headlight assemblies to access bulbs. If the owner's manual shows a procedure that involves removing multiple components or disconnecting electrical connectors you are not comfortable with, have a shop handle it. Many auto parts stores will install bulbs purchased there for a small fee or for free.

Tasks 3 and 4

Air filters.

Your vehicle has two air filters that you can replace yourself: the cabin air filter (which cleans the air you breathe inside the vehicle) and the engine air filter (which cleans the air the engine breathes for combustion). Both are inexpensive, take less than five minutes, and require no tools on most vehicles.

Cabin air filter

Every 15,000 to 30,000 miles

The cabin air filter sits in the HVAC system and filters the air that comes through the vents when you run the heater, air conditioning, or fan. It traps dust, pollen, mold spores, exhaust particles, and odors. Over time, it becomes clogged, reducing airflow and allowing contaminants to pass through.

Where to find it

On most vehicles, the cabin air filter is behind the glove box. Open the glove box, release the retaining tabs or straps that hold it in place (the manual shows exactly how for your vehicle), and the glove box drops down to reveal the filter housing. Some vehicles place the filter under the dashboard on the passenger side or under the hood near the windshield base. The owner's manual specifies the location.

How to replace it

Open the filter housing cover (usually a clip or tab). Slide the old filter out. Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter before removing it. Insert the new filter with the arrow pointing in the same direction. Close the housing, reattach the glove box, and the job is done.

What you will find

A filter that has not been replaced in 30,000 miles is often visibly clogged with leaves, dirt, pollen, and sometimes insects. Comparing the old and new filter side by side is a vivid reminder of what the filter was keeping out of the air you breathe.

Engine air filter

Every 15,000 to 30,000 miles

The engine air filter cleans the air that enters the engine for combustion. A clean filter allows the engine to breathe freely and operate efficiently. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which reduces power, increases fuel consumption, and in extreme cases can allow unfiltered air to bypass the filter and enter the engine, where abrasive particles cause accelerated wear.

Where to find it

The engine air filter is in a housing (air box) in the engine compartment, usually a large rectangular or cylindrical plastic box with a large intake duct. It is one of the most accessible components under the hood. The owner's manual identifies the location.

How to replace it

Open the air box housing. Most use spring clips, plastic tabs, or screws. Lift the lid, remove the old filter, and note how it sits in the housing. Wipe out any debris that has collected in the bottom of the housing with a clean rag. Place the new filter in the same orientation. Close and secure the housing. Make sure all clips or screws are fully engaged so unfiltered air cannot bypass the filter.

Dusty or gravel road driving

If you regularly drive on unpaved roads, check the engine air filter more frequently than the standard interval. Dusty conditions can clog a filter in half the normal mileage. Hold the filter up to a light source: if you cannot see light through the filter material, it is time to replace it.

Do not clean and reuse disposable filters. Standard paper-element air filters are designed to be replaced, not cleaned. Blowing them out with compressed air can damage the filter media and allow particles to pass through. Aftermarket reusable filters (such as oiled cotton or foam filters) can be cleaned and re-oiled, but disposable paper filters should be replaced with a new one.

Task 5

Checking and replacing fuses.

When a single electrical component stops working (one power window, the radio, the cigarette lighter, one set of lights), the most common cause is a blown fuse. Checking and replacing a fuse takes less than five minutes, costs under a dollar, and resolves the problem immediately if the fuse was the cause.

What a fuse does

A fuse is a sacrificial link in an electrical circuit. It contains a thin metal strip designed to melt and break the circuit if the current exceeds a safe level, protecting the wiring and the component from damage. When a fuse blows, it disconnects power to that specific circuit. Everything else continues to work normally.

Fuses are rated in amps (5A, 10A, 15A, 20A, 25A, 30A, etc.) and are color-coded by rating. The fuse box diagram (printed on the fuse box cover or in the owner's manual) maps each fuse position to the circuit it protects: radio, power windows, fuel pump, headlights, and so on.

How to check and replace

Turn the ignition off. Never remove or insert a fuse with the ignition on.

Locate the fuse box. Most vehicles have two: one inside the cabin (under the dashboard on the driver's side or behind a panel near the driver's knee) and one in the engine compartment. The owner's manual shows both locations.

Read the diagram. Find the fuse position for the circuit that is not working. The diagram is printed on the fuse box cover or in the manual.

Pull the fuse. Use the fuse puller tool (usually clipped to the inside of the fuse box cover) or a pair of needle-nose pliers. Grip the top of the fuse and pull straight out.

Inspect the fuse. Hold it up to the light or use your flashlight. A good fuse has an intact metal strip visible through the translucent housing. A blown fuse has a visibly broken or melted strip, and the housing may be discolored.

Replace with the same amperage. Push a new fuse of the same amperage rating into the same position. Never substitute a higher-rated fuse. The fuse rating matches the wire gauge of that circuit. A higher fuse allows more current than the wiring can safely carry, which can cause a fire.

If the new fuse blows immediately

A fuse that blows again right away indicates a short circuit in that system. The fuse is doing its job by protecting the wiring. Do not keep replacing fuses or install a higher-rated fuse to prevent it from blowing. The short circuit needs to be found and repaired by a professional. Ignoring it risks an electrical fire.

Keep spare fuses

Many fuse box covers have spare fuse positions with a few extras pre-installed from the factory. An assorted fuse kit with common sizes (5A through 30A) costs under $10 and fits in the glove box. Having spares means you can fix a blown fuse on the road instead of searching for an auto parts store.

Fuse sizes and colors.

Standard blade fuses are color-coded by amperage: tan (5A), brown (7.5A), red (10A), blue (15A), yellow (20A), clear or natural (25A), green (30A). Fuse sizes include mini, standard, and maxi. Your vehicle uses a specific size; the fuse box cover or manual identifies it. Do not force a standard fuse into a mini fuse slot or vice versa.

Task 6

Checking and topping off fluids.

A monthly fluid check takes ten minutes and catches problems before they become failures. You are checking levels and condition. If something is low, you are adding fluid. If something looks wrong (discolored, milky, gritty), you are noting it for professional evaluation, not diagnosing it yourself.

Windshield washer fluid

The simplest fluid to check and fill. The reservoir is usually a translucent plastic tank in the engine compartment with a windshield-wiper symbol on the cap. Fill with commercially sold washer fluid (not water). In cold climates, use fluid rated below your lowest expected temperature. Fill to the marked line or within an inch of the top.

Owner task? Yes. No risk, no precision required.

Engine oil

Check monthly. Engine off, vehicle on level ground. Pull the dipstick, wipe clean with a rag, reinsert fully, pull again, read the level. Oil should be between the MIN and MAX marks. If low, add the oil grade specified in the owner's manual (such as 0W-20 or 5W-30) through the oil filler cap on the top of the engine. Add half a quart at a time, wait a minute, then recheck. Overfilling is harmful to the engine.

Owner task? Yes for checking and adding. Oil changes are covered in a separate guide.

Coolant

Check the overflow reservoir level with the engine cool. The level should be between the MIN and MAX lines. If low, add the correct coolant type (the owner's manual specifies the color and formulation). Never open the radiator cap on a warm or hot engine. If the reservoir is consistently low, the system may have a leak that needs professional diagnosis.

Owner task? Checking and minor top-off, yes. Investigating a recurring low level, no.

Brake fluid

Look at the reservoir (usually near the back of the engine compartment on the driver's side) without opening it. The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks on the translucent reservoir. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, so avoid opening the cap unnecessarily. If the level is significantly below MIN, there may be a brake system leak. Do not drive until inspected.

Owner task? Visual check only. Adding brake fluid or investigating a low level is a professional task.

Power steering fluid

Applies to vehicles with hydraulic power steering (not electric). The reservoir is usually a small cylinder with a cap, sometimes with a dipstick built into the cap. Check with the engine off and fluid at operating temperature. The level should be between the HOT and COLD marks. Use the fluid type specified in the owner's manual. If the system uses electric power steering, there is no fluid to check.

Owner task? Checking and minor top-off, yes. A system that is consistently low needs professional evaluation.

Transmission fluid

Some vehicles have a transmission dipstick; many modern vehicles do not and require professional equipment to check the level. If your vehicle has a dipstick, the owner's manual describes how to check it (some require the engine running, in park, at operating temperature). Healthy transmission fluid is red or pink. Dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell indicates degraded fluid that needs changing.

Owner task? Visual check if a dipstick is present. Adding or changing transmission fluid is a professional task for most owners.

A fluid that is consistently low tells you something.

Fluids do not evaporate out of sealed systems (with minor exceptions for oil consumption in some engines). If a fluid level drops between checks, the system has a leak or the engine is consuming it. Topping off addresses the symptom. Finding the cause addresses the problem. Note any fluid you add (type, amount, date) on the vehicle information sheet from the Learning Your Vehicle guide. When you tell a mechanic "I have been adding a quart of oil every 2,000 miles," that is actionable diagnostic information.

When to call a professional

These tasks have limits.

Everything on this page is owner-safe. But each task has a boundary where the work shifts from simple maintenance to diagnosis or repair.

A new fuse blows immediately after installation.

This indicates a short circuit in the wiring or the component. A professional needs to trace the circuit and find the fault. Never install a higher-rated fuse to prevent it from blowing.

A fluid is consistently low between checks.

Topping off is a stopgap. A leak or consumption issue needs diagnosis. This is especially urgent for brake fluid (potential brake system leak) and coolant (potential head gasket or internal engine issue).

A bulb replacement requires removing multiple components.

If accessing the bulb means removing the bumper, the battery, or an air intake assembly, and you are not comfortable with that level of disassembly, let a shop handle it. Forcing access risks breaking clips and damaging components.

Oil is milky, frothy, or has a sweet smell.

Milky oil indicates coolant contamination, which can mean a failing head gasket or another internal engine problem. Do not drive. Have it towed and inspected.

Multiple electrical systems fail at once.

If several unrelated systems stop working simultaneously, the problem is likely a shared fuse, a relay, a wiring fault, or an alternator issue rather than individual fuses. This needs professional diagnosis.

Keep going

Every task builds confidence.

The first time you replace a wiper blade or swap an air filter, it takes longer than it should because everything is unfamiliar. The second time, you know exactly where the housing is, which way the clip releases, and how the new part fits. By the third time, it is routine. That is the point. These small tasks build the mechanical familiarity that makes you a better, more capable vehicle owner.
