Bluegrass region soils are naturally rich — test before adding anything. Eastern KY mountain soils are acidic and need lime and compost. UK Extension county offices offer soil testing at low cost.
Know your soil
Eastern Kentucky's mountain soils are thin, acidic, and steep — productive in bottomland coves but rocky on slopes. The Bluegrass region has some of the best agricultural soil in the country: deep, phosphate-rich limestone-based soils that grow exceptional crops and famous bluegrass. Western Kentucky has productive silt loam in the river bottoms.
