Eastern Kentucky's steep mountain hollows are death traps in heavy rain. The July 2022 flood dropped 8-10 inches of rain in 12 hours, killed 44 people, and destroyed hundreds of homes in Letcher, Knott, Perry, and Breathitt counties. There was no meaningful warning time. If you live in a hollow, you need an evacuation plan that doesn't require roads. Western Kentucky sits in a major tornado corridor. The December 10-11, 2021 tornado outbreak produced a tornado that tracked 165+ miles across western Kentucky, devastating Mayfield and killing 77 people. It was the deadliest December tornado in US history. Tornado season here is year-round — December outbreaks are not anomalies. Kentucky gets hit by ice storms regularly — more than most states realize. The Bluegrass and Pennyrile regions lose power for days when ice accumulates on trees and lines. Rural Eastern Kentucky ice events are especially dangerous because roads become impassable and power restoration takes weeks in remote hollows.
