Battery lighting comes first. But not every household can afford it, and not every outage ends before the batteries do. Candles kept civilization lit for thousands of years. They still work. This guide is about using them wisely.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Five thousand years of proven technology.
Before there were batteries, before there was kerosene, before there was gas lighting or electricity, there was a wick in fat. That is all a candle is: a delivery system that moves fuel to a flame at a controlled rate. The technology is so simple that nearly every civilization on earth arrived at it independently.
The earliest known candles date to roughly 3000 BCE. The Romans made tallow candles from rendered animal fat. Medieval households burned rushlights, strips of rush dipped in grease that gave a smoky, uneven flame but cost almost nothing. Beeswax candles burned cleaner and brighter, but only churches and the wealthy could afford them. For most of human history, after dark meant either fire or bed.
Whaling changed the economics in the 18th century. Spermaceti, the waxy substance from sperm whale heads, produced a hard, bright, nearly odorless candle. It became the standard by which other light sources were measured. The "candlepower" unit of luminous intensity dates from this era. When petroleum refining arrived in the 1850s, paraffin wax replaced spermaceti and made candles cheap enough for every household. By then, gas lighting was already reaching cities, and Edison's bulb followed within decades.
The point is not nostalgia. The point is that candles are not primitive. They are a mature, well-understood technology with known performance characteristics and known hazards. When someone says "a candle is all I can afford right now," they are not describing a failure. They are describing what most of the human race used for most of recorded history. The question is not whether candles work. The question is how to use them intelligently alongside everything we have learned since.
THE LIGHTING HIERARCHY
Where candles actually belong.
The CDC and U.S. Fire Administration recommend battery-powered lighting during power outages because it eliminates fire risk entirely. Candles are a real option, not a first option. Build your lighting from the top down.
Headlamps, flashlights, LED lanterns
Primary lighting. Brighter, safer, portable, usable around children and pets and fuel and bedding. One LED lantern on low outperforms a dozen candles. A $10 flashlight in every bedroom eliminates the most dangerous candle scenario: someone lighting a flame while half asleep.
Flameless LED candles
Safe ambient light for bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, and anywhere people might fall asleep. The warm flickering glow mimics a real flame. You can leave them on all night, hand them to a child, or set them near curtains without risk. They run 100+ hours on coin-cell batteries.
Commercial emergency candles
Sealed liquid-paraffin candles and sturdy metal-tin survival candles are purpose-built for long-duration backup. They offer predictable burn times, stable flames, and enclosed designs that reduce fire risk. Better tested and more consistent than improvised alternatives.
Ordinary household candles
Jar candles, pillars, votives, and tea lights you already own. They were not designed for emergencies, but they burn. An unscented jar candle in a stable holder, supervised by a calm adult, is a reasonable backup. Most households already have some.
Homemade candles and oil lamps
Crisco candles, cooking-oil lamps, and other improvisations. Useful skills to understand. More variables than commercial products, so closer supervision is required. These are fallback knowledge, not primary equipment.
Build from the top. If you can afford a $15 LED lantern, buy it before you stockpile candles. If you already have the lantern, candles become a genuine backup layer rather than the only plan. If candles are genuinely all you can afford right now, they will keep you out of the dark, and this guide will help you use them safely.
THE HOUSEHOLD FLAME POLICY
When open flame is and is not appropriate.
Not every outage is a candle situation. Write a household open-flame policy and keep it with your emergency supplies. The conditions determine the answer, not the convenience.
Green conditions
Open flame is a reasonable option when all of these are true:
- A calm adult is awake and present
- Smoke alarms are working
- The candle is in a proper holder on a stable surface
- A fire extinguisher is accessible
- Battery lighting is unavailable or being conserved for task use
- No combustible clutter within 12 inches of the candle
Yellow conditions
Use flameless lighting instead unless conditions can be corrected:
- Children under 10 are present and active
- Pets are roaming the space
- The supervising adult is fatigued
- The room is cluttered or unfamiliar
- Gusty drafts are present from open windows or vents
- The household is in an unfamiliar location
No-flame conditions
No open flame under any circumstances:
- Sleeping hours
- Active evacuation
- Suspected gas leak
- Oxygen equipment in use
- Vehicle or tent occupancy
- Wildfire evacuation conditions
- No working smoke alarms
- Impaired supervision
Print this and tape it inside the lid of your candle storage bin. In an outage, you will be tired, your children will be anxious, and the temptation will be to light something quickly. The policy does the thinking for you before the stress arrives.
THE MYTH THAT MATTERS MOST
Candles are not space heaters.
This needs its own section because the internet will not stop suggesting it. A candle produces roughly 80 watts of thermal energy. A small space heater produces 1,500 watts. You would need about 19 candles to match it, and 19 open flames in a room is not a heating plan. It is a fire.
The "terracotta pot candle heater" appears in social media every winter. The concept is to place an inverted flowerpot over a candle or group of candles to "trap and radiate" the heat. The pot does get warm. It also gets hot enough to crack, trapping the candles underneath a superheated ceramic dome that can shatter or ignite anything it touches. The setup raises the surface temperature of nearby objects and concentrates flame gases in ways the candle was never designed for.
For winter outages, the effective tools are insulation, layered clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, and a warm-room strategy where the household gathers in one interior room with closed doors. Safe indoor-rated heating equipment, used according to its manual, is the mechanical backup. Candles provide light. They do not provide meaningful heat, and attempts to force them into that role create hazards far worse than cold.
SUPPLY PLANNING
Plan by hours of light, not by counting candles.
"I have 24 candles" tells you nothing useful. "I have 240 candle-hours, enough for 30 evenings at two candles for four hours" tells you exactly where you stand.
The candle-hours formula
Total candle-hours = number of candles x tested average burn time per candle
Days of coverage = total candle-hours / (candles burned at one time x hours used per day)
Example: 24 candles, each tested at 10 hours
24 x 10 = 240 candle-hours
Burning 2 candles for 4 hours per evening: 240 / (2 x 4) = 30 evenings
This is not 30 days of sufficient household lighting. It is 30 evenings of supervised ambient flame. Your battery lighting covers the rest.
The key word above is tested. Marketing burn-time claims are advertising, not field data. A candle labeled "100 hours" may deliver 60 or 120 depending on wick design, draft, altitude, and how often you relight it. Test one sample from each type you store.
A simple burn test
Pick one candle from each type in your supply. Record the brand, fuel type, container, wick count, and listed burn time. Light it in a safe, supervised location on a noncombustible surface. Use the wick-trimming practice the manufacturer recommends.
Record the start time. Check it every hour. Note the flame height, soot, smoke, odor, container temperature, and any wax leakage. When it burns out or you extinguish it, record the end time and the remaining wax.
Judge whether it produced enough light for reading, cooking, using a bathroom, or doing a basic repair. Use the resulting tested runtime in your candle-hours calculation. File the test results in your household binder.
STORAGE AND STAGING
Where candles live before you need them.
Candles have a long shelf life when stored properly. Cool, dry, and dark is the standard. Direct sunlight softens wax and warps containers. High heat melts them. Humidity degrades wicks. Store them away from windows, attics, and garages in a sealed plastic tote labeled with the contents and date.
Unscented candles are more versatile for emergencies. Scented candles can cause headaches in confined spaces with poor ventilation, and some household members may be sensitive to fragrance, especially during the stress of an outage. Stock unscented for your reserve and keep scented candles for normal household use.
Primary lighting bin
Headlamps, handheld flashlights, lanterns, spare batteries, charging cables, and battery organizer. This is the first thing you reach for in an outage.
Secondary lighting bin
Flameless LED candles, low-output night lights, and glow sticks. Safe for bedrooms, children, pets, and overnight use. No fire risk.
Open-flame bin (restricted)
Emergency candles, matches, lighter, snuffer, appropriate holders, metal tray, and a printed copy of your household flame policy. Store where children cannot access it independently.
Fire safety location
Fire extinguisher, smoke alarm test log, escape plan diagram, and emergency contact list. Everyone in the household should know where this is.
Keep a household inventory that records each candle's brand, type, burn-time claim, your tested runtime, location, whether it needs a separate holder, and which room or device it is assigned to. This takes ten minutes to create and saves real confusion in the dark.
