Lithium Batteries (AA and AAA)

The premium battery for kits that sit and wait. Energizer Ultimate Lithium cells last up to 20 to 25 years in storage, weigh one-third less than alkaline, work in extreme temperatures from -40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and are guaranteed leak-proof. When you need a battery you can forget about for a decade, this is the one.

THE CASE FOR LITHIUM

When alkaline is not enough.

Lithium primary cells (not to be confused with lithium-ion rechargeables) are the battery you put in a kit and forget. They self-discharge at about 1 percent per year, compared to 2 to 3 percent for alkaline. That difference compounds over time: after 10 years, a lithium cell still has roughly 90 percent of its capacity while an alkaline cell is down to 70 to 80 percent.

The other advantages are practical. Lithium cells are guaranteed leak-proof, which matters for devices stored inside sealed kits. They weigh about one-third less than alkaline, which adds up in a go-bag. And they perform in extreme temperatures where alkaline cells struggle: -40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, compared to alkaline's practical range of about 32 to 130 degrees.

The tradeoff is cost: lithium cells run 2 to 3 times more per unit than alkaline. For kits that you rotate frequently, alkaline is the better value. For kits that sit in a closet, a vehicle, or a shed for years between checks, lithium is worth the premium.

Where to use them

Best uses for lithium

Go-bags and vehicle kits stored long-term

Smoke detectors (leak-proof, 10-year cells)

Flashlights stored in garages, sheds, or cars

Weather radios in kits you check annually

Save money with alkaline

Flashlights and radios you use regularly

Kits you rotate every 6 to 12 months

Low-drain devices (remotes, clocks)

Any device where you cycle through batteries frequently enough that shelf life is irrelevant

Storage

Same as alkaline: cool, dry, room temperature, in original packaging. The difference is that lithium cells tolerate wider temperature swings without damage, so they are a better fit for unheated storage like a vehicle glove box or a shed.

The brand that matters: Energizer Ultimate Lithium is the dominant product in this category and the only widely available lithium primary AA/AAA cell with the 20-to-25-year shelf life claim. There is no meaningful generic alternative at this time.

WHERE TO BUY

The one brand that matters here.

Energizer Ultimate Lithium is the product. Available in 4-packs, 8-packs, 12-packs, and 24-packs. The per-cell cost drops meaningfully in the 8-pack and above.
