NiMH Rechargeable Batteries

Alkaline batteries are a countdown. Every hour of use brings you closer to replacing them. In a multi-day outage, that countdown creates anxiety: how many batteries do I have left, and how long can I make them last?
NiMH rechargeable batteries reverse that math. Use them all night, charge them all day, use them again. With a solar panel and a USB-powered NiMH charger, you have a closed loop that runs as long as the sun comes up. The same set of four AA cells can power a flashlight for 5 to 10 years of daily cycling before they need replacing.
This is also the battery inside most solar path lights. When a path light's runtime drops after a year or two of use, replacing the NiMH AA cell restores it to original performance.

For preparedness, the standard Eneloop is the better investment. The 2,100-cycle rating means the battery will outlast the device it powers. How many to keep
Two full sets of whatever your primary devices need. One set in the devices, one set charged and ready. For a household with a flashlight and a weather radio, that is 8 AA cells total. Add more if you run battery-powered lanterns or have multiple flashlights.
Store charged NiMH cells the same way as alkaline: cool, dry, room temperature. At 40 to 60 percent charge if storing for months without use. The Eneloop's low self-discharge means they stay ready without the weekly topping-off that older NiMH batteries required.
Keep a stash of alkaline batteries as backup. Rechargeables are the daily driver; alkaline is the reserve that works without a charger.
