March 2019
In March 2019, a bomb cyclone brought heavy rain on top of frozen ground and deep snowpack across Nebraska. The Platte and Missouri rivers flooded catastrophically. Levees breached. Bridges washed out. Cattle drowned by the thousands. Offutt Air Force Base, home of U.S. Strategic Command, was partially flooded. Damage exceeded $1.3 billion.
The bomb cyclone was not a single-cause event. It was a combination: frozen ground that could not absorb rain, snowpack that melted rapidly, ice jams that blocked river channels, and rain that fell on top of all of it. Each factor alone was manageable. Together they overwhelmed every flood control system in the state.
For every Nebraska household near a river, the lesson is about compound events. Spring flooding is most dangerous when multiple factors stack: deep snowpack, rapid warming, rain, and saturated or frozen ground. Monitor the spring flood outlook from the National Weather Service starting in February.
